: Good buy or Not
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1970 SS 396 Chevelle that needs complete restoration. It doesn't have the original motor but does have a 71 454 4 bolt main square port heads engine with a rock crusher 4 speed and the original 12 bolt. The car has all the factory inerior pieces with front seats already recovered and material for rear included. The car has never been in a garage that I can tell but quarters look salvagable. Fenders need patched at bottoms and I am not sure about doors, or floors and it doesn't have the factory hood. My question is tis a good buy at $8000 or is it a little to much? The car is supposed to be red w/ black strpies.
I am a 69 Camaro person that don't want to let a good deal slip through my fingers if it is...Thanks for any help...Jeff:thumbsup:

With this statement about the car, I would almost be certain there is cancer in the usual places. What kind of climate has this car been sitting outside in all it's life ? Bottom line, it's hard for any of us to give you an idea on value without seeing some pics. From what you describe, it might be a fair, or good price, or you could be buying a nightmare. Go look at the car, take some pics, post them for us to see and i'm sure you will get a good feel for value from the folks here

jwt Jan 30th, 07, 12:41 PM That is my intentions but the car is 3 hours away and I live in central Ohio and it is in the southern hills of Ohio. I don't feel it is going anywhere but you never know if you drag your feet. Thanks and I will try and get pics.
hmott Jan 30th, 07, 2:17 PM Where is the car, I'm in SE ohio and may be able to go look it over for you. I know all the rust places, cuase I have them :) Not looking for another so no worry of me stealing it from you.
Brettd85 Jan 30th, 07, 2:57 PM With the way prices are going, even with lots of rust repair, it sounds like a good price... to me.
grovey Jan 30th, 07, 3:12 PM any of you ohio guys deer hunt ? whats the chances of hooking up a fellow tc member with a place to hunt ? i was in se ohio two years ago, and really liked it. with that said .you better really look the car over. ohio is in the rust belt. tim
No Ohio is the rust belt!!!!!
grovey Jan 30th, 07, 11:26 PM yep, it's bad here in pa,but ohio, and new york are the worst i've seen.

Its hard to say if 8K is worth it or not. Any pics would be very nice. You say it has the wrong hood on it. If your thinking it should have the Cowl Induction hood with the flapper door on it, that was actually an extra cost option on the SS. So it may still have the correct hood on it. However, if it has a completely flat hood like a non-SS car would have. Then it is indeed the wrong hood. It should be a bulged hood. Im not a 70 expert but I do believe the bulged style hood is the standard part of the SS option.
jasondunn Jan 31st, 07, 7:32 AM In my opinion if it has most of the original parts like seats, dash rear ets you can part it out and make 8K back. The rock crusher alone starts at over $1000. You may end up with a car that has orderd options on the build sheet or a rare car. Who knows.
oldtimebaseballfan Jan 31st, 07, 8:48 AM To sum it up:
No documentation,
wrong drivetrain,
doesn't have SS hood,
needs lots of body work,
needs complete restoration.
I don't see that as a good price. You should get someone that knows about 70 SS cars to look at it. It might be a malibu with a wrong year big block. I wouldn't spend 8 grand on a malibu that needs a complete resto.
It Is A 2 Owner Car And This Owner Has Had It Since 1974. The Hood Is An Aftermarket Fiberglass So I Know It Is Wrong. It Does Have The Round Gauge Package And Does Have A Factory Tach.
Is The Car Worth More If I Already Have A 1970 Ls-6 Ce Engine To Clone The Car Or Is It Worth More With A Dated 396?
