I think I am going to start concentrating more on the body until it's painting. I will be using BC/CC PPG paint, I priced some primer I think it was PPG, a few months ago, it was a few hundred bucks, thats nuts. What are some alternatives or brand, prices you guys have used with good to great results? Or even bad results, better yet... whats good to stay away from? I will be using a respiator in my garage to prime, I know some primers need actual fresh air breathers which I will not have.
Thanks.... tongue.gif

My suggestion stay away from OMNI. Sorry but I wouldnt spray OMNI on my beat up wheelbarrow.
Sherwin Williams or Martin Senour paint(same stuff just diff label) are both great lines and slightly cheaper then PPG but not much.

One of the cheaper lines Ive used is Valspar(which owns House of Kolor), just like all brands they make some great stuff and make some junk. They have a great epoxy either VP40 or VP50 Id go with the VP50. They also make a good primer part number Sunfil 92. I wasnt impressed with their topcoats which would be base, clear and single. stage urethane.

A gallon of VP50 was 79 bucks and the hardner was 34. A gallon of Sunfil92 was 80 bucks and I dont recall what the hardner ran.

A nice "Value line" would be Dupont's Nason. Am not a fan of the "value line" products period, but do believe that Nason is the best of them. I hate PPG's OMNI with a passion, S-W's line is ok and Nason is a good product for the money.

By the way if you get PPG's NCP 271/272 primers you dont need to worry about breathing in the bad stuff as its ISO free, so a fresh air unit isnt really required. Plus its good primer too...Eric

Ditto on the Nason. Nason 2k select prime is a nice thick 2k thats only about $80 a gallon. Their clear is pretty sweet for the price also. Basecoats are a little on the thin side. U-Tech is also a great product for the money, made/owned by Akzo Noble. U-tech Polybase basecoat is great stuff,Mixed 4:1:1, covers in two to three coats, any color and its cheap too. Most colors(even pearls and reds are under $100/gallon.

Thanks guys, always helpful. More than the guys at the paint place! They just want my cash ;) I'll print up this page and take it with me so I remember all the numbers. Which of these other primer and paint lines would not need fresh air breathers? Is it as long as something is ISO free? And what is ISO again? :D

And if you can throw in your knowledge on primer colors id appreaciate it :D Does it make a huge difference? Light colors would need lighter primers, dark and dark, etc?

All of the products that I have seen that dont contain ISO's will state that on the can. Its a selling point to some people!!

Yes color can come into play, but NOT all primers can be tinted. The tintable primers in the PPG line dont have film build like other non tintable primers. So it can take more primer to do the same task.
Not all tintable primers are like this am guessing but do know thats true for PPG.
Really I wouldnt worry about a colored primer. If you want a colored undercoat prior to basecoat then a tintable sealer would be a better choice in my opinion.

ISO is short for isocyanate, a chemical in the paint that is used to cure the product.
