: Skin or not to skin

I have a few options here. I can either skin my chevelles quarters or totaly replace them with new factory style quarters (1969 by the way) A few problems arise. So ill start from the beginning. The car is a plain jane 1969 Chevelle Malibu probably original 307 powerglide with bench seats, and air conditioning. Originally a dark blue with blue interior. I didnt spend alot for it and i plan to keep this car and get some experience working on it for future cars so even if i do spend a little to much on it thats fine because i want to learn too but not get totaly screwed over. I want to keep the car for quite awhile though. So the car as it is today, It has a relativly fresh 454 bored .06 over and an m20 that shifts flawlessly. only downside is in the future it will need a rear end (10 bolt 2.53's ugg). So im not quite sure in what to do when replacing the quarters. So i have a few questions / points.

1. the original skins that someone put on were done very poorly its not very noticable although the bondo on the seem is starting to crack. The quarter skin itself isint in real bad shape. The door jam is in good shape too.
2. When they skinned the car they had to use the original quarters where they attach to the filler panel. So this portion is severely rusted and the only lway to get this part is either from a parts car or a full quarter.
3. Money is another issue. (ha anyone got some 69 quarters?) Im not going for perfect show car but i want the car to be solid and presentable. I dont want to spend a whole lot of money but to make it presentable and done right im willing to work a little extra to earn the cash. Im not really sure what to do.
4. finally when installing all this i am putting in a new Rear seat pan, inner and outter wheel-wells, trunk floor, trunk braces, gas tank braces, and drop offs ( got it all for a good price ) I plan to instal it all myself so cheap labor. I have been practicing welding and am getting good at it i have repaired sever spots in my frame that have turned out very well. My question here is in what order should this all go together?
No welding till its all fit ill use self taping screws

1. Rear seat pan
2. Fix / fabricate parts to fix the over rear axel pan
3. install inner wheel housing
4. install trunk right floor
5. install inner wheel housing
6. install trunk left floor (3 piece pan by the way)
7. Fit outters right and left
8. fit quarters / skins?
9. Fit drop offs to quarters and right and left pan
10. fit center trunk pan
11. gas tank braces

Im not really sure this is my first car that ive done serious body work too and i plan to keep the car.

First off althou it might not seem like it but doing a entire panel replacement will be CHEAPER then just skinning one.

Secondly if someone was in there already do you really want to try and mess with their mistakes and headaches?? You mention one was installed poorly before why hassle with trying to skin a quarter then on top of that fixing someones problems??

Install an entire new quarter and be done with it no worries no headahces...Eric

Thats what i was figuring... it was just going to be so much easier to put totally new on and just not mess with what they did.

I know they are starting to REPOP the 69 quarters but where can i get them? does anyone make them quite yet? i found on oldcarnetwork full 69 quarters for 350 each ish.. i talked to them and they said they would have them in may and they may be quite a bit more but well see any ideas?

Tom,
Did Dave get you as far as the pics you have?

I take it you have not finished the trunk.

No i tore out the opposite side and drop off fixed minor frame issues but new body bushings on the right side and now ive decided i need to do the rear seat before i do more trunk.

Do the skins replace that corner that the filler panel attaches too behind the bumper? Because i dont need the door jam or sail panel
