: 67 SS Speedo with a small square slot to the left on the face-Speed Warning mabey?
66 Chevelle Bob Jan 26th, 07, 2:49 PM My friend just bought a 67 SS Chevelle. The speedo which looks original has a small square slot in the face to the left. What is the slot for? Is it a speed warning indicator light? Was this an option in 67 but not in 66? Never seen one before. Any one know....?
SebJr Jan 26th, 07, 3:04 PM High beam indicator, In 67 an emergency brake light was integrated into the cluster so they had to make a provision for another indicator light.
jaf6738 Jan 26th, 07, 3:06 PM Your not talking about the high beam indicator light, are you?
66 Chevelle Bob Jan 26th, 07, 3:51 PM I guess according to Seb that it is a High Beam indicator. Do all 67 models have this same speedometer. SS and alike...?
MJRIBEIRO Jan 26th, 07, 4:12 PM I have it on my Malibu - nothing too special

Well... no. There are several different options for the 67 that will reflect what the speedo assembly will look like. It’s kind of tricky to explain but I’ll give it a shot. I restored my assembly last year and did a lot of research, but I am going from memory, so have mercy on me if I trip up on one, and correct me.
The instrument cluster consists of some basic components; fist is the assembly, or main housing. The assembly is what holds a number of “pods” inserted into it that are seen through the “face” and covered by the “lens”. There are different assembly pods, faceplates and lenses, depending on what the application is as ordered. For example: If you’re looking at a SS, it will not have a clock, or PRNDL in the assembly speedo pod or lens. It will, however have a clock delete in one of the pods and a plug in the lens, where the clock set shaft would be on a Malibu, unless it had a factory gauge package installed. If the SS had the optional gauge package (two pods + speedo pod) the lens will NOT have a clock set rod plug in the lens.

Jim,
Don't take this the wrong way...but some misinformation above , I can't get into it now Im on my way out. Maybe someone else can correct it before I get a chance to log back on.

DaleM Jan 27th, 07, 2:17 AM All 67's had the high beam indicator moved to the location noted. The only exception is if the Special Instrumentation (RPO U14) was ordered. Then the speedo face was identical to the 66 (i.e., no high beam indicator) and the high beam indicator moved to the right lamp location where the GEN||BRAKE were normally located. The BRAKE lamp was moved to the left lamp location since OIL||TEMP lamps were no longer required.
Clocks were optional on the 67 300/300 Deluxe series only and standard on the Malibu, Concours, and SS396 - no such thing as a clock delete option in 1967 anymore than radio or air conditioning delete. The 300/300 Deluxe without a optional clock still had the stem hole plugged.

A basic Chevelle Malibu/SS396 dash would have the gas gauge in the left pod and clock in the right pod. OIL||TEMP lamps on the left and GEN||BRAKE on the right with high-beam with the speedo.
Automatic w/column shift had indicator on the dash as shown on all models - different of course whether Powerglide or TH400 regardless of series. No pattern for column shifted manual transmission cars.

The rest gets tricky.
When buckets AND console were ordered, gear indicator moved to the console with the automatics and speedo face reverted back to manual style, i.e., no shift pattern indicator. The clock in the right gauge pod was automatically moved to the console and this vacated area received a blank plate. The lense on the U14 gauge package had no provision for a clock stem in either 66 or 67 as far as I know. On real factory gauges I've never seen a plugged clock stem hole, only those that have the new aftermarket replacements.
When RPO U14 gauges were ordered (on any V8 coupe, convertible or V8 Custom El Camino - they are not SS gauges by the way) the clock was moved to the console if buckets and console were ordered OR the clock was mounted on the floor if buckets/console were not ordered. On 66s, the clock moved to the top of the dash.

If buckets and console were ordered and ONLY the U16 tachometer (not the U14 instrument package) the clock moved to the console and the clock received a blank plate in the dash and all other gauges (gas) and indicator lamps stood pat. If buckets/console not ordered, clock stayed put.
One thing I have never seen is an automatic with the U14 instrument package (that would automatically move the clock) with bench seats where there's no console to put the clock in. Whether the clock was then moved to the floor like the manual trans car above is uncertain but until one appears, I'll go with that assumption that it did.
