This is probably a crazy question however one for the experts. I recently ran across a 67 Chevelle Wagon with a 3 speed on the column and a pull lever on the dash for overdrive. I have never seen this set up. Is this a 67 only option? Can anyone tell me how this O.D. works and if there is anyhing rare about it. It is an original 283 car with a 136 v.i.n. Thanks for the help. Don

That was not available as an option. There were no stock overdrive transmissions offered from 64-72.

I have a 67 Malibu wagon. 283 with a factory 3 speed overdrive. It has a 3.70 non posi 10 bolt & even had factory air shocks with steel & rubber lines. The car was not running when I got it so I don't know how it works but it did have a pull cable mounted under the dash & an electric switch but I don't remember where it was mounted. I sold the trans setup so I don't have any pictures. My guess is that since the car had a small motor the 3.70 helped get it going & the overdrive helped on gas, it was from Montana which is where I got it. It was option RPO M10. On page 7 of the 1967 Chevelle owners manual it tells how it works.

Thanks for your comments everyone. This is definitely factory installed on this wagon. I'd like to have the car but it is pretty rusty but very original and complete down to the poverty hub caps and steelies. Any idea how many of these 67 Wagons came with the overdrive? I need to decide whether to buy this thing or move on. I could buy the car between $3000-$4000 with a pretty nice original interior and a clean title. Don

Can`t break it down to just wagons, but 67 had the least # of overdrives installed at 1878.

the overdrive is pretty neat. pull the cable to engage it. you can actually split shift it.. take of in 1st lever in..let off gas..pull lever..wind it up some more..kinda tricky on a 3 on the tree, lol. really, when you get to 3rd gear, let off the gas and pull the lever that is overdrive..it should have a kick down switch so if you floor it, it kicks the od out. 1 other thing, with the lever pulled, it will not hold parked in gear...gotta use the e brake to hold it.

The Saginaw that they used in 67 is much better than the early ones and is quite adequate behind a 283. If nothing else get the whole setup and put it in something else.

OD is cool. gives you 6 speeds.

6 gears??? Ok here's the loaded question. What is this car worth? It is really rough but 99% of original components are there. It's just cool. Don

Well, the reality is that nobody would ever want to shift a three speed + overdrive through 6 gears. As an economical family cruiser the 283 3 speed/OD makes sense then and now.

What is it worth? I dunno, back it up to the phone and let me hear it. Seriously what do you think it is worth in relation to what the buyer is asking? How about some pics to help out all the arm chair car appraisers on Team Chevelle.

I think that you should get it if you like it and if it makes sense for your budget.

With a little work the OD will fit on to the back of a Saginaw 4spd (3&4 speed use same case and mainshaft) It actually makes a pretty good setup for a driver.

I've got the three speed manual with overdrive in my 64 Chevelle. The overdrive is actually automatic. There is a governor that handles the shifts. At speeds above about 35 miles per hour, if you let off the throttle for a quick moment it will shift into overdrive. There is an electric switch that works like a kickdown feature. Stomp the accelerator and the overdrive will downshift to 1:1 for passing. The pull cable is to lock out the overdrive. For normal use, leave the cable in. You don't pull it to make every shift.

The comments about needing to use the parking brake to hold the car are correct. Also, to push start the car, the O.D. unit must be locked out.

sounds like it was a neat option for the time, would not mind having it if i was not racing the car. it is another classic item!! in other words it would be cool to have on a show car or cruiser.

Duece. This is a great example of a car being worth what you believe it is worth? It is not worht much for what it is but you mentioned the magic word youself....COOL. IMO there is no other reason to screw with these things (waaaaay too many headaches if you ain't in love with them) if you ain't feelin' it.

If you can (and want to) do most of the work yourself and build what you want without loosing the house over it then go for it.

Sounds like a neat ride and would be a intriguing when done.
