On a 1972 SS
1. Do the quarters have seperate inner skins like the front fenders and can you replace them?

2. What is the procedure for seperating them?

Thanks, Jim Owens 1972 Chevelle SS.

There are no inner skins, based on 70 ss I am in the process of putting new 1/4's on.

I got a spot weld remover, from Eastwood I think, and used it on the second 1/4 with better results than with the drill bit method. The drill bits will work however. You can usually see the spot welds once you wire wheel the paint and rust away. Drill down the center and pry up with a screw driver (or proper pry device) and you usually pop the metal parts free. I started at the tail light area and moved my way forward. I had cut out the old 1/4's and did not have to worry about the extra metal, only the spots that were at the edges. You may want to have on hand the new 1/4's to compare to what is being cut out so you don't get carried away and remove something you shouldn't. I bent up some of the metal I wanted to keep and found it was easy to bend back or work back into position.

Beware: I found that just about all of the metal in the rear of the car was bad. I had to replace the floor in the trunk, the outer and inner rear wheel wells, and the piece that goes from the floor to the 1/4 panel. the braces for the trunk and fuel tank were replaced also. There was lots of patch work for the parts I couldn't get new.

I must say this was a bit harder and has taken forever to do versus what I expected. I am taking my time and the results so far are pretty good. I have a wire welder and have gotten acceptable with welding this rusty thin steel. I suspect this would be the way to go and can't think of another way to put the parts together and make it strong like new.

Good luck!

Ken, where did you buy your spot weld remover? Did you have to order it, or did you go to a body shop supply store?

It was Eastwood, at www.eastwoodcompany.com. (http://www.eastwoodcompany.com.)

Please take a look on line, possibly search for spot weld cutter or Part number 19068. This P/N is on the package from when I bought it a year or so ago.

I just looked thru the catalog and did not find it however.

Thanks Ken, I checked out Eastwood and they have the 10 pack and 15 pack megs. I think I'll go with the 15 in case I need heavy duty in the future.
