: big exhaust pipes
Jim Mac Jan 25th, 07, 10:38 PM Im flipping through the channels and on one of the import shows the guy says he likes big pipes on his cars. So im thinking. you see his 3" muffler sticking out of a car with a 2 liter motor. If someone does it up, proportionately to say a 427(7liters) that would be 1.5" per liter so you would end up with a 10.5 inch sewer pipe under your big block chevelle.
I must have been a little tired thinking this stuff up last night. Jim
bri2203 Jan 25th, 07, 10:54 PM some of those 2.0 liter engines are making 300 hp. 300 hp with a single 3"exhaust would be reasonable.
But yes many of the tuners you see have a single 1.5" in and 3" out which is just funny.
68bye Jan 25th, 07, 10:58 PM 'Round here we call 'em fart pipes. They are really effective at making a car run bad and sound obnoxious. At least the $5.99 cherry bombs on a small block sounded cool when we were young.
dscabra Jan 25th, 07, 11:26 PM For some reason I can't even hear those coffee can exhaust pipes over my puny little 2 1/2 inch exhaust. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that they are usually more than a couple of car lengths behind me after the light turns green!
chevelleguy2005 Jan 26th, 07, 12:38 AM that brings up a good point. today in my high school auto tech class we had to bring in a kid's 94' mazda 626. it had a coffee can on it and it sounded horrible. but when my buddy brought his 68' chevelle into the shop to fix a leaky rearend, you couldn't hear the mazda thanks to the 3" glasspacks on the 68'. you do have to give the tuner crowd credit though for getting 300 hp out of four bangers, but personally i'll stick with a V8. plus, any musclecar will pick up more girls that some coffee can civic.
theclencher Jan 26th, 07, 1:22 AM 3" pipe diameter = 7.065 sq in cross sectional area
3" pipe (7.065 sq in) for 2 liters = 3.5325 sq in per liter = 2.12" pipe diameter for 1 liter
7 liters = 3.5325 x 7 = 24.73 sq in
24.73 sq in = 5.6" diameter pipe, or two 3.97" pipes with duals... saaaay, we have some guys running 4" duals don't we???
NiteOwlNY Jan 26th, 07, 10:02 AM Old73 I have you beat... I used to give them this piece of paper that said they had to take the fart can off, put on the OEM muffler and pay a fine on top of it....
I've got a local kid in a Bright Yellow Dodge Neon who thinks my street is a revival of the old Bridgehampton track.... On top of it he's got the loudest fart can out of the bunch... I'm about to become a thorn in the side of my local police precinct....
Olle Jan 26th, 07, 10:09 AM I like those big ricer pipes. It's so easy to shove a potato in a 3" pipe. :)
68bye Jan 26th, 07, 10:41 PM I blame the movie "fast and the furious" for this whole craze. Do you know how many times I've heard the word nos? Not N.O.S., but nos. It drives me nuts. Or how many times I've heard the phrase, "like on the fast and furious". Kids talk about racing on the street. I quickly interupt them and ask "have you ever watched someone die in a street race?" No? Yeah, I thought so. You wouldn't be so hot for it if you had. If you really want to race someone, take it to the track. Hollywood has glamourized street racing. I guess I'm just getting older, but I disagree with the whole lifestyle. Then again, watching someone get cut in half over a dumb race would probably change alot of perspectives. Sorry I drifted of subject, I just can't help myself sometimes.
NiteOwlNY Jan 26th, 07, 10:43 PM Hollywood has been glamorizing street racing since the 50's......
There's just so much more of it these days....
Jim Mac Jan 26th, 07, 11:31 PM funny thing is most of these cars would embarrass themselves at the track, but at least its the right place to do it. Wait!!! my chevelle embarrassed me at the track. But at least it was safe and legal. Jim

First time I went racing at Atco raceway in NJ in 1991 I had a 325 HP 327 in my 1964 Chevelle. I got my @$$ handed to me by a Volkswagon Bug! I ran 15 flat, he ran a 9.90! In a Bug! With a Bug engine! That was right before I built the 472 caddy powered chevy pick up. My friends called it the Chevrolac Truck De Ville. I still have yet to lose to ricer.
mr 4 speed Jan 27th, 07, 11:04 AM We call those mufflers dukie pipes or chee chee ha-ha's around here
