Did 1970 LS6 Cars Come w/ A/C??? I might be mistaken, but I recall once hearing that the 1970 LS6 Cars did not allow for A/C because of lack of room in the Engine Bay. Is this true? Thanks.

No A/c on any solid lifter cam engine. That included the 375 hp 396 and the LS6. You wanted a/c you got a LS5.

It was not due to lack of space it was due to the increased heat the engine generated with solid lifters and higher compressions.

Actually it was the high rpm these solid lifter engines turned. The A/C compressors in use were not designed for those high rpm's.

Actually it was both, the heat generated at prolonged idle and the high rpms. Jb

There was a '70 running around our area claiming the car had a dealer installed LS6 into an a/c equipped car. I don't think he had any paperwork to prove it. I guess it was possible back then as dealers would do just about anything for a sale.

The key words are dealer installed

So I guess it could be said that there are no "numbers matching" LS-6 or L-78 cars out there correct?

Or even more likely, there is nothing an owner wouldn't do to a car in their own garage.

That is the general understanding and to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever proven otherwise either with GM documentation nor with a documented car.

To qualify the statement you may need to add "...with factory air conditioning..." There are certainly "numbers matching" LS-6 and L-78 cars out there.

Sorry about that... That's what I meant to type.

As one final piece of evidence of no A/C equipped LS-6 cars factory produced, if such a thing were ever to be produced, it would require use of a deep groove type three groove crank pulley to drive that air compressor. No such item was ever made. All LS-6 cars used a two groove deep crank pulley which will not run the A/C. If a dealer did the conversion, he would need to use the low perf three groove pulley as it was the only thing available. It would work, but would probably prove unreliable at High RPM. It is safe to say that unless one was sneaked out the back door for someone with connections to have the line workers make it, NO A/C equipped LS-6 cars were ever factory produced.
