How did this CAR get a CA commercial plate??
Black/yellow plates in CA with a letter and 5 numbers are considered commercial plates and usually only found on El Caminos and trucks which carry yearly tonnage fees.

Because it's a North Carolina plate would be my guess.

the first pics say CA but the last ones do say North Carolina. don`t know why they would have Ca plates on it anyway since it`s located back east.

Has Calif. plates in some pics and North Carolina plates in others and is being sold out of Massachusetts? I'd be a little wary about this auction even with the seller's feedback rating of 99.4% positive. 64elkynss

I had to go back and review the ad again. I see the one picture with the NC plate now and I see where the seller says the black plate is a vanity plate.
Why would he use the black CA plate, except for the purpose of deception?
Is he trying to make people think this is a CA car?

That would be my guess... Of course, if people are going to pay extra just because of those plates (even though they can't use them), then can you blame him? Its marketing...
Honestly, when I advertise my car, I will probably put " Original California Black Plate car" because it is, even though it no longer has those plates on it anymore...
Maybe its because I am not from Back East, but I can't see where "California Plates" are that important, especially when they can't be used (except as vanity plates)... I see where "California" implies "Rust Free", but now days, who knows where the car was in the mean time (and California DOES have some areas with severe body cancer problems, like near the ocean!)...
California also had the strictest smog laws, so why would you want to show the car was originally from California? especially if its been restored, then any rust should have been taking care of...
Its funny, because I hear alot of people like buying rust free "Arizona" cars, yet I never hear about old/original "Arizona plates"??? I wonder why?

I don't know why anyone would want the plate I don't see it relating to the car and there seems to be only one. You would need two to get the car registered in CA.
Tony, the only thing I can think of as to why people seem to feel there is value in the CA plates is that CA didn't change the entire plate that often. Some states in the past (not sure which states or if they still do) would issue new plates to a car each year. CA would go for quite a while without changing the plate.
I agree on the "California rust free" issue too. When I bought my 62 Bubble top I checked one from a seller in Wisconsin who could not stop telling me that is was an "original CA car". Now it was built in CA and stayed there until 1965 when the owner moved to South Dakota(!) and then Wisconsin. But heck yes it was an original CA car!

Just curious..
What about the southern cars ? Atlanta build cars and such.... How big a difference between a CA and a GA car ?
Seems like everybody is either talking about a CA car or a northeastern car...

the reason the black CA plate is coveted is two fold
they look cool :D
an to still be on the car it means that it was registered in CA continuously without any breaks ....
or it would have had its black plate replaced even if it never left the state
