Will a Edelbrock rebuild kit work for a Q-jet?

Yes it should if you match up the correct kit...be careful on the needle and seat..its borderline of being too large for everday driving. I've been buying stuff here... http://www.carburetion.com/order.htm

The edelbrock made a q-jet needle & seat is a high flow .145" which can be too large for the street but i dont know if thats the same needle & seat in their rbld kits. There kits are listed as being std repl kits for q-jets too which makes me think that kit doesnt have the larger needl & seat becasue they could poss cause driveability issues esp in stock applications.

Go to the edelbrock website to get their toll free # to call & ask them about it or send an email to them from the website to ask if that kit is correct for your application/carb id and if it in fact has the large .145" needle & seat.

gm/ad delco made .110" (std for sbc),.125"(Std for BBC/but not lrg enough for mild perf BBC),and a .135" (used on lrg block pontiacs/olds/caddy's/buicks etc but never stock on bbc even an LS5 that needed it but its the ticket for a mild to fairly hot bbc esp for street.). But these are not avail through GM anymore, long gone yrs ago.

Why not just go to any real parts store with your carb number and get the correct kit? No need to spend twice the money for an Edelbrock kit that may or may not have the correct gaskets for your carb.

I agree. You can get a kit that fits for less than $20 at the parts store, as long as you have a the carb number. BTW, I don't think any rebuild kits come with needles and jets, but the fuel inlet valve is usually included.

Elco,
Do yourself a favor, get the carb number off the side of the carb and go to your local GM dealer and have them order you a kit, if they dont have it. I have probably done a hundred Q-jets in my life, and the few times I was in a hurry and got an aftermarket kit, I was always sorry :( I did the one on my Wifes 84 Riviera two weekends ago when it started running bad. It was Saturday and even though I knew better, I got a kit at Carquest. Well needless to say, when I got it all apart, one of the gaskets was slightly different. I waited till Monday and got the correct GM kit. The gasket was correct and the car is running fine. While you are in it replace the float too ... cheap insurance. And epoxy the well plugs, if they are not leaking they will sooner or later.

Just my opinion,

Yup,i agree with Shurkey just get a kit rom your local parts store.

But if its a q-jet that going a a mild to fairly hot BBC then the stock .125" needle & seat that come with the kit will likely be too small and run dry at high rpm/top end in the higher gears under heavy load.

I have been working on BBC for over 36yrs now and have seen it happen time & time again 1st hand,. So keep that in mind if you run into what could be fuel delivery issues on top end after you rbld of carb.

Dont forget to epoxy the well/casting plugs below the float bowl whle your at it too.

I found that it is no more expensive ordering the individual parts from the link I provided above and you can get what you really need. Some of the late model carb kits are close to $30 and you are mainly paying for extra gaskets you won't need. Alot of the premade kits I have seen have .110 needle seat which are alittle small. I would not advise the edelbrock needle and seat especially if its an early carb. There is just not suffient pressure on the needle with the early floats and you will likely have flooding problems unless you run real low regulated pressure. Been there done that. I have a hard time finding .135 needle/seat. I know jet makes them but time you pay for shipping not worth it. I would also suggest replacing the float..

Well this is what I have for a number 170 350. I am assuming it is from a late '70's early '80's buick. The numbers in the middle are missing. I will probably just buy the individual parts that I need.
This is in my Elco with a '87 and later small Block. What size CI, I do not know yet. Still has a O2 sensor coming out the exhaust manifold.
My other option is my holley 4010. Does anyone have a part number for a throttle shaft bushing kit?
I also have my 930 CFM Barry Grant Stage 3 4779, unfortunaltly (sp?) this is to big.

I used the jet bushing kit. Its kinda expensive to do 1 carb but does come with enough bushings for several carbs. Carbs unlimited also sells individual busihings if you have the rest of the tools. You could also send the base off to have it rebushed for around 50-60 if you don't want to do it yourself.

Heres the jet kit

Heres another slightly different kit offered by cliff ruggles

Jet also has a holley bushing kit listed on their website.

Bill,

I hate to say this but I have seen the local auto parts store parts runner guys dropping parts off at the local chevy dealer. If you are referring to a delco parts kit or a rochester kit then you clearly live in a different town than I do. The chevy garage goes to the same places I go to to get their kits and then charges more for the same kit I can get at autozone.

I, too, have rebuilt over a hundred Q-Jets and have NEVER gotten a kit from ANY aftermarket auto parts store that wasn't entirely adequate for the rebuild. Not saying that you are wrong. Just saying that the average auto parts store sells good kits for less that the average GM dealership sells the same kit.
