Good Evening Everone,

I have my Chevelle for sale and have a gentlemen looking to buy my car from pics only. I know the car is great and he will be happy but how do I ensure that the payment he hands over is bulletproof ? I am in Canada and we may meet at the border with the car in a hauler.

My plan was to first get a $500 deposit by wire or paypal and make sure he gives me a certified bank draft from a major US bank at the hand over, is this sufficient ? I was warned that phoney bank drafts are possible ?

Any thoughts from those who know ?

Thanks,

Andre

Use an escrow service if your dealing long distance. The service acts as a middleman. You send the money to them, the seller sends you the car after your funds have been verrified. Once you receive the car, the seller gets the money from the escrow service. If you don't get the car, you get your money back from the escrow service. You can research more specifically how these work via eBay's Using an Escrow Service (http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/payment-escrow.html)help topic.

An International Bank Draft would normally be the way to go here. However, you are taking a bit of a risk if you accept it and then hand over the car without verifying the draft's authenticity. If a draft is the form of payment, I would want to go into my bank with it and then have them phone the issuing bank to confirm legitimacy (normally the issuing bank will not release information like this to an individual). Yes, this may delay the transaction a while, but it is the safe thing to do. The "International Bank Draft" route is the way I have gone in the past, for both buying and selling to/from the United States. It's been a lot of years since I did any transactions and there seemed to be more trust and integrity at that time than in today's climate. I would be more protective today to be honest.

Otherwise PayPal or Cash.

WELL like othe said cash is king but i went to Lancaster South Carolina to pick up a 63 impala on time and me and the guy agreed upon cash Well long story short when i was coming threw SC i got pulled by a state trooper who ask me what was in the litte duffle bag its like the size of what you will put hair clippers in. And i told him oh 19000 dollars well tell you one thing. There is some BS out there saying that 5000 or more on a individual should be taken as supect and i told him about the car and he was like i should not be carrying around that kind of money i had escorted me too the station to were i had to prove holder of the money showing my bank records. Now that some BS so cash is ok but drive slow. When you get it. But you can do it on a week day and just call his bank and ask do he have the funds to cover the check. They will say yes or no they cannot give you the exact amount in the account but all they can say is yes or no.

CASH only!!! Thats how it should be done. And you want to make sure he has insurance on the car the day he picks it up and transfer the title work to hom same day!!! or you can get screwed! The new owner can procrastionate on doing title work ownership and if something happens and the car is still in your name its your fault! Take the time and do it right and dont get screwed!

My Beaumont was in Canada when I bought it. I had my bank wire the money to the sellers account. The seller Fed-exed all the paperwork when he received payment. Deal was done in a couple days.

Don't know if this works for Canada or not, but couldn't you open an account at the same bank (different branch), and then have the funds electronically transferred (same banking company, someone large like Citibank or Bank Of America, etc), then you could withdraw the funds (or transfer) and place them in your own account at your own bank... Might be a little work/time, but keeps your own account safe...

Not sure if this would really work...
