Looking through Hemmings I see an add for this metal shrinking grinder. The guy uses different pads on a high speed grinder to shrink down high spots. The thing looks pretty cool and it seems like a great thing to have. Anyone out there have one or know more about this, is it worth the cash or just a gimmick? Thanks...Eric

Ok, I have one. It does EVERYTHING he says it does!
You are not heating a large area like a torch. Think of if as a "heat block". You are ONLY heating the high spots. You then cool it and shrink ONLY the high spots. You are taking NO metal off. Now, you then go over it with an 80 grit open coat grinding disc. Again, these are large 9" discs on a VERY firm backing. You are "blocking" with the grinder and cutting only a very little bit of metal off.
I don't use it everyday, in fact take it out very little. I just grind them and spread filler, sorry. But when I had the time to play with it, it was AMAZING. I metal finished a quarter panel on a Toyota, yes a Toyota that was so bad the metal was folded over it's self! I metal finished it using the disc to a darn near polished state. It took LESS primer than I usually use filling the average plastic filler repair.
IT WORKS EXACTLY AS HE SAYS IT DOES.

By the way...
You HAVE TO use a large 15 amp 5000 RPM grinder (he sells it at a good price) it is one MEAN mutha. But like any tool, treat it with respect and it will do it's job.
He has a video set showing it in use. It is MIND NUMBING, I mean one of the worst videos I have ever seen. BUT, it does it's job and shows you how to use it and some other valuable tips on dressing dollies and hammers and metal bumping.
He also has MANY, MANY other tools of very high quality like hammers, dollies and the like. I bought a die for my phumatic Planishing hammer from him. I have never seen another for sale, so he has the hard to find stuff too.

It is pretty amazing to watch the friction disc at work - but man does it work! I guess I am lucky enough to be in his "neighborhood", I have seen him at a number of car shows in the vendor area. I was impressed enough with what I saw that I bought $700 worth of his tools on the spot!
The way I figure it, if you had the friction disc system and one of those stick welding dent pullers you could literally fix ANYTHING!
