I think someone is trying to pull a fast one on me. This guy is offering me a front clip but how can i tell the difference between a 69 chevelle front clip from a 68 chevelle or a 68/69 el camino. As far as i can tell, the only difference is the grill on the 68 and the 69 from either.

There are a few more differences than just the grill. The marker lights in the fenders are larger and lower on the 68. Also the bumper is different to allow for different parking lights. The hood release and filler panel is also different. header panel should be the same, as is the hood. Most of these parts are interchangeable and will fit, but at least you will know what you are looking at.

what about on the nose of the car, does it say El-camino in cursive like the chevelle has its name in cursive

Actually, the 68-9 hoods are different.
They look the same, but the hinges, and the hinge mountings (on the hood side) are different.
They will interchange, but you must have the correct hinges. (ie 68 hood-68 hinges.69 hood, 69 hinges)

Dean is right. There is no difference in the nose of a chevelle or elky in '69. '70 is when they started making them different.

As for the difference between '68 and '69...

68
metal grille
center bar of grille above center
headlight bezels all chrome
turn signals in bumper mounted way out near the edge of the bumper
Side marker lights mounted low with large lights and engine size emblem

69
plastic grille
center grille bar centered
turn signals in bumper mouned inside the same hole where the hood latch is
headlight bezels painted black inside, chrome outside
Side marker lights located higher, with long, skinny lights and engine size emblems.

There are some others, but those are the most obvious clues. You can reference my sig for a pic of a '69.

Either year, it'll bolt up to your car. I have one '68 fender on my car. There is no difference other than the hole for the side light.
