Hey guys, brand new to the forum. Just picked up a 68 malibu with a 307 (I know kinda weak). Overall the car is very straight, I know the lady who bought the car brand new in 1968. It has the usual rust spots (quarters and lower fenders). I have already located the neccessary panels. The plan is for the spring to get all the body work done, redo the hard vinyl top, paint a metallic gun metal, and slap some 17' in the front and 18's in the back. Then when this year is over, I will pull it back into the garage and tear into the drivetrain. Any help or tips is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the welcome guys. Quick question, how does the 17" wheels up front with 18" in back look? Anyone have this combo or maybe some pictures?

welcome Scott :D
its always good to have anther 68 owner !! if the running gear will get it done for anther year ... it gives you time to sort out the body- brakes- & steering-also its much more fun to be driving it around even powered by a 307 while your building you monster BB in the garage... some times they take longer to build then we thought when we started ...ask anyone on these boards & you'll hear a similar story ..""I took it apart last summer to install the motor ... I figure by next year it will be running again"" .... Plan save dream it will come together for you ... but its more enjoyable to be riding around then looking at it in pieces on the garage floor !!! an besides that stack of brand new hi-perf box's stacked in the living room is impressive as an expensive furniture I've ever seen

Hey Scott, I do have one suggestion on the drivetrain as the old saying goes "Theres no replacment for displacment"

I want to stay as affordable as possible, and all I am trying to acheive is 350-400 hp. What would you guys suggest for a motor in order to stay relatively inexpensive? I also want to keep the car an automatic at least for now, but I would like something with overdrive for longer trips. What would you suggest as far as transmission goes? Any help is always appreciated!

Scott,
you need to ditch the 307 get a 454 from GM and either a 700 R4 or a 4L80

That would be great, I just dont know how cost effective it would be. Obviously a 454 isnt neccessary for high 300's HP. What other more affordable options would I have? And yes I was leaning towards a 700R4
