I'll assume you are talking about a 78-87 GMC Caballero.

There are 4 bolt head you'll see in the center of the tail gate. Those 4 bolts hold the license plate frame into the tail gate. Simply remove them and remove the frame from the tail gate. Then twist the tag lamp socket off the top and you've removed the frame.

I've never had to service the the tail gate release, but it's ver possible you can access it from there.

Hope this helps.

Rick

Thanks for the info, Rick. This is a first for me. Just found the proverbial "car-in-the-barn", an 81 Caballero Diablo, parked almost 10 years. The tailgate's seized.

That's a cool one to find! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif You may end up having to just spray everything down with penetrating oil.

Good luck

Is there an access panel on the inside of the tailagate like some of the trucks and some other elkys? I know it was easy to access the mechanism in my wagon http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif but then again i did have to take the interior panel off... I gotta put that back on one of these days!

There is no access panel, just the whole where the license plate holder is.

Thanks everyone; it worked just as Rick said; access to the release, etc. all freed up with penetrant. i have to treat the whole rig with it.
