I found this very interesting. The prices have really changed in ten years. There's a frame off documented LS-6 convertible in one ad that is #1 or#2 condition for 57k...

I was looking through some old NCOA "Chevelle Report" mags recently.
The Oct. 1987 issue had a frame off restored 70 LS5 for $9,000 obo in the classified section. In 1992, to celebrate the clubs 10th anniversary they gave away a beautiful bonafide, documented restored 70 LS6. You had to buy one of 1667 numbered posters of the LS6 for $30.00 to enter. The cost of all the posters amounts to $50,010.

Two SS-396, one assembled, one basket, both auto, air, vinyl top cars,
have everything for both cars except one windshield

I like this one. Now you'd pay that just for the basket case.

No doubt about it!

I remember buying my first Chevelle in high school in 1989, I paid $1,000 for a 70 Malibu with a 350. Car had an SS hood and black interior. needed work, but pretty solid car. Now you would pay at least $5,000 for that. I remember wanting a real SS then but couldn't afford one til later on. When I bought that 70 for $1,000 one of my neighbors was selling a 71 SS with a 402, buckets, console, air car for $2,900. The car was awesome, no rust, blue with a black vinyl top and black stripes. I begged my parents at the time, but they thought that was a crazy price for an "old car" Now that car, you could probably add another zero on the end to it.
