I would like to make a 70 Chevelle clone from a 1972. Does anyone know if the front clip of a 72 chevelle can be replaced with the front clip of a 70 Chevelle clip and if so how difficult it would be?

Thanks,
Vrod

if you have a front clip ,with the core support and the wireing for all the lights its a direct bolt on!

My question for you is... Why? Everyone and his/her brother has a 70, and that's why I have grown to dislike them. Everywhere you look there is a 70... Or everyone says "Oh I want a 70 Chevelle!". If it's not a 70, it's a 70 clone! Why not just keep it a 72? I see far less 72's than any other year in the 70-72 range.

Jason, be different if you must - but for the rest of us the '70 just plain looks more "bitchin". I wouldn't go out of my way to do the front clip swap unless the car needed a front clip anyway. The enthusiast car world is full of certain year versions of a popular model that always seem to have greater eye appeal. Why is it that a '56 is generally less sought after than a '55 or '57. Or how about the '58 that is often looked over for a '57 or '59 - the list goes on and on.

I guess I am different in that way... Personally I would rather have a 56, than a 55 or a 57 because that's what you mostly see everywhere. Even though they are essentially the same car I don't like them because they are so common... Same with the Chevelles... I'm not fond of the 70 because they are so common... Like I said, everyone and his/her brother wants one, so why not leave the car a 72?... I'm not badmouthing 70 (or 55 & 57s), or saying I wouldn't own one, but I would rather be just that little bit different.

I always wanted a 70 but ended up finding a good deal on my 71. When I bought the car my intentions were similar wanting to convert it to a 70, but after awhile the looks of the 71 grew on me and I wouldn't change it now. It looks just fine. smile.gif

Up here in van city I have seen two of such transplants I have seen a 72 with 70 lights and a 70 with 72 lights The owner (of both cars) switched the front clips and i thought the 70 front with 72 bullet tailights looked pretty cool myself.

I guess I'm different too. I'd rather have a '71 than a '70, which I do. I'd rather have a '67 than a '66, which I do. Now, if I could just get my wife convinced that I need a '69, I'll be super happy. ;)

personally,

I like the quad headlamps and grill of the 1970 model a little better then either 71 or 72 models, and I also don't like the wrap-around front markers (although I don't like the 70 side markers too much either) and finally, the rear bumpers, I like the idea of the SS bumper pad of the 1970's. But 71's and 72's seem to sell for much less than comparible 1970 models...

I have thought of building a clone of a Heavy Chevy (including the decals), but using the 1970 body styling...

Are 1970's really that much more common, or is it just perception? Anyone have production numbers handy?

Remember that 1970 was the pinnicle of factory performance for the "Musclecar era", not just with the Chevelles, but most cars... I think that has a lot to do with their popularity with the general public...

Hey! I just finished doing this. So if you need pointers or pictures let me know. So you are just look to do the front end? If you just want the 4 headlights like I did, it's not too bad. But if you want to go all out, the 70' fenders have turn signals in the actual fenders, and so does the bumper, the 71's dont. I bought brand new fenders but I stayed with 71's because I want it real clean and no turn signals on the sides, real legal you know... :D But Um, I got the headlamp bezels, the fender extensions, the radiator core support, new rad. core bushings, the headlights, and some other misc. stuff. The wiring harness I re-wired myself and it worked out perfectly. I got some doner plugs from a pick in pull off an old chevy for the high beams and just wired it in. I think I exceeded my price limit, but I did it over about 4 weeks so I didnt notice how much I spent graemlins/hurray.gif

X2!...I also prefer the single headlamps of the '71-'72's...I don't understand why a lot of guys absolutely want a '70...
A few months ago, when I told my friends that I was interested in buying a Chevelle, the first answer most were giving me was "are you going to buy a '70?" ......I felt like shouting to them "No!...Leave me alone with your '70!...I want a '71 (and that's what I eventually bought.)
Don't get me wrong...there's nothing wrong with a '70, but nothing wrong with a '71 or '72 either.

Claude. ;)
