What kind of amp gauge? If its a aftermarket, don't use it and get a volt gauge. Aftermarket amp gauges have to be wired inline with the battery charge wire, which requires heavy gauge wiring. Voltmeters are better and easier to wire. See link

Which is better voltmeter or ampmeter (http://www.autometer.com/tech_faq_answer.aspx?sid=1&qid=5)

Found this simple set of instructions on http://www.centuryperformance.com/mallory/wiring.asp#Tachometer

Tachometer Wiring:

There is no image for this, but it is quite simple.

Red to 12-volt "switched" power supply
Black to ground
Green to trigger (negative side of coil, or tach output terminal if using an aftermarket ignition control)
White (or yellow) to light circuit

This link shows how to convert from idiot lights to factory gauges
