: How does cold weather affect your car?
69heartbeat Jan 23rd, 07, 7:57 PM Hello everyone im obviously new this game,so excuse me for the stupid question. But i figured it wont hurt to ask. I recently am a new owner of a 69 chevelle for about a month now. My problem is that i usually start the car about 3 times a week. Then recently as i start it it will idle for about 5mins then it will shut down. I do have gas. My buddy just recently replaced the electric choke. I was told it can be the float, mixture, jets and most of all the cold chicago weather were having. I dont know were to start????? By the way GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!:beers: Thanks, Jared Smith
blacknwhite71 Jan 23rd, 07, 9:28 PM Cold weather won't do that if anything it won't start in the first place if its too cold thats the only problems that I have had with the cold. But then again it only gets down to the 20s a few times a year and they shut down schools and everything for that. Gotta love living in the south.
novaderrik Jan 23rd, 07, 10:59 PM the idle mixture is too lean, and the idle speed might be too low.
when it's cold, the choke is closed, which causes it to run way rich and idle faster.
when the choke opens up, it leans way out and the idle comes down.
try cranking up the idle speed a bit after it's warmed up, and playing with the idle mixture screws.

IF (big IF) your temps are in the 33--40 degree range, and if the heated air intake to the carb has been defeated (or was never there to begin with) you may be dealing with carb icing. If the carb is iced, it may not re-start or will run poorly if restarted immediately after stalling. If you wait a minute or two, it may run just fine--until it ices again.
Just plain old cold is NOT a reason for stalling--at least not down to -40 if the fuel is blended for cold weather.
theclencher Jan 24th, 07, 2:31 AM Yes, starting a car three times a week without DRIVING IT is a problem! WTH???
Ryan's malibu Jan 24th, 07, 7:23 AM ya, i would agree with the last comment. before my car was ready to drive i started it up 1 or 2 times a week only to find a few weeks later i had fouled my plugs. try to drive the car around if the roads are not too bad.

I'm thinking since he's from the windy city, it's probably too snowy/icy.
dreis454 Jan 24th, 07, 1:08 PM replace the fuel filter while waiting for good weather

Well then ya just let it sit there, unmolested, until the roads are clear!
novaderrik Jan 24th, 07, 7:58 PM i've heard about this "icing" thing, but never experienced it.
i've ran cars in the winter with not only open element air cleaners, but also my home made dual snorkel ram air setup in -20 degree weather.
the only benefit of the heat stove is better running when it isn't totally warmed up yet.
if a car dies when it comes off the choke, something isn't adjsuted properly.

Carb icing, if that is what you are referring to usually doesn't happen to cars. Maybe without an air cleaner it might, but its more common on airplanes.
