: No side marker lights on 68 chevelle, why?
jhilts Jan 23rd, 07, 1:02 PM My cousin just cut up a 68 chevelle that did not have side marker lights. We were under the impression all 68s had side marker lights.
Someone had cut out the vin# and cowl tag. It had a 12 bolt, we were just curious as to what the car may have been.
vrooom3440 Jan 23rd, 07, 1:08 PM These were transitional years with a fair amount of regulatory changes occurring.
Now Chevelle *may* be different, but for El Caminos in '68 there were no rear side markers. Only front markers. The rear side markers were added in '69 and I think I have read some very late '68 cars also got the rear side markers.
Bill Rose Jan 23rd, 07, 1:21 PM There were no rear side marker lights on 68 Chevelles. The tail light wraped around the side. In 69 the tail lights were changed. They didn't wrwp around the side, and the marker lights were added.
EDIT: Not sure about ElCamino's. They had different tail lights. Wagons too.
"Some" 68 elkys had the lights. Here's a brochure photo showing them. I've seen a total of one with the lights.
Hmmm....I also just noticed that that the SS grille emblem looks to be below center as pointed out here recently.

DZAUTO Jan 23rd, 07, 2:07 PM Here is my son's banged up 68, as you see, no rear side markers. As I recall, its about a Mar-Apr built car.

Brettd85 Jan 23rd, 07, 2:17 PM My 68 el camino has front side marker lighter, but no rear.
Alwhite00 Jan 23rd, 07, 5:30 PM If the tail light wraps around doesn't that classify it as a side marker? Like on the front of a 71/72 Chevelle.

Coppertop Jan 23rd, 07, 8:43 PM ALL Passenger Vehicles in the US for the 1968 model year to PRESENT HAVE to have side marker lamps, this was a government mandate spurred on by industry talks and the congressional hearings that erupted from Ralph Nader's book UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED.
ALL 1968 vehicles have front side marker lights. Again, since the 1968 Chevelle tail light design "wraps" around, this constitutes as a rear marker indication.
This is called engineering--same idea on the 2000-2005 Impala, they have "no" front side marker light as the turnsignal/front marker light wraps around and serves double-duty.
Some 1968 Elky's actually had a rear marker lamp, again, as mentioned this was a time of engineering vs. cost vs. goverment regulation trial and error.
HemiTCoupe Jan 23rd, 07, 8:53 PM I have a '68 El Camino that does not have side lights in the rear, But it does have the plug in for the side bulbs in the wire harness, in the quarter panels on each side.
