15-40 rotella in the Monte with a BBC. I use it due to the zinc content.

The new improved rotella is all new since October and the zinc has been cut. It is to meet the new smog requirements for the 2007 diesels.
Shell still markets the old foruma but most stores are now only selling the newer version. It has a yellow stick on the front.
The old version is still available from a oil supply house. I bought up 80 quarts of the stuff last week to guarantee a 5 year supply.
All my other daily drivers get 10-30 and anything that is on sale.

"that zinc dissapeared in October, the new stuff meets the new smog requirements for diesels."

Your mistaken, the zinc levels were lowered & not removed, see below for the info i go staight from the sheel oil eng's when i asked them if there was enough zinc left in the soteela t to protect our flat tappet cams.

11/18/06 UPDATE ON THE NEW REFORMULATED SHELL ROTELLA T 15W-40/DIESEL OIL FOR 2007 FROM SHELL OIL ENGINEER

Here is the ans i got from shell oil engineer when i asked if the newly reformulated rotella t 15w-40 still had enough anti wear ZDDP/Zinc in it to safely/properly protect the flat tappet hyd/solid lifter cams in our older SBC/BBC motors.
Dear Scott,

Zinc levels are being lowered on almost all engine oils, but the heavy duty diesel engine oils, such as the Rotella T, will continue to have higher levels than the passenger car/gasoline engine oils. The Rotella T 15W-40 meets API SL, SJ, SH and all previous specifications for gasoline engines. Rotella T 15W-40 is recommended for and used in many mixed fleet applications. It does have a higher antiwear level to protect the heavy duty diesel engines and should give you very good performance in this regard.

Thank you for your interest in our products! If you have any further questions, please call us at 800 231 6950.

Sincerely,
MaryCarol Boemmel

The new Rotella oils are designated CJ-4 which is a reduced level of zinc. The old designed oil with the high level of zinc is still available but not easy to find at any discount store. You need to go back to a supplier.
While the new rotella oils are still better then the average motor oil I have a very very expensive engine and took the effort to find the old rotella oil before the zinc was reduced.
I do run a roller cam with 550 pound springs. I lost a roller cam last year before I made the switch to rotella.

This is pretty good article. Looks to me like the Valvoline Race is the way to go. I was surprised to see the zinc content of Shell Rotella 15-40.
