VIN's on '64's - '68's told us if a Chevelle was a Super Sport or not. But does a numbers matching big block Chevelle from 69 - 70 mean it is a true Super Sport?

I would say yes if the engine block hasn't been restamped and, of course, it's a big block engine. The SS option was still a high-performance option in 69 and 70 and the 396/402 was part of the package unless one opted for the 454.

One caveat, there have been reports of 396/402 engines installed in 69 and 70 Chevelles that did not order the SS option but these engines are the LS3.
