Got me two of those plastic viewingholes for the primary and secondary bowls on my carb. it's a real cool concept where you can see where the fuel level is and adjust the needle and seats accordingly.

Well unfortunately, mine broke off inside my primary bowl.

I took off the primary bowl and am in the process of removing the plasic from the hole. A casualty of this battle was the gasket got torn.

Got a few questions...

1) where can I get the gasket that connects on my bown to the carb. Is this an autozone thing?

2) Do I use some sort of sealer on the gasket or just go in raw?

3) Anything I should know during reassembly?

Use Holley buna rubber gaskets. They're reusable.

And NO "sealer"...the gasket goes on dry.
BTW...for some reason it's pretty common for those sight glass plugs to break off. I think from the gas, the plastic swells in the bowl plug threads.

Itr was a cool idea, just proving not very practicle.

I just remembered that I have a holley trick kit. I'll just use the gaskets from there and rebuild it proper when I have more time and not on the side of the road.

According to my book I got and the trick kit, I am missing a piece of my carb. It is a check ball and hing that is not present on mine. just a rubber pink plug.

Yup, just push that little pink tit through, a little spit or PAM spray will help. Make sure its all the way in. If it looks like its all the way through, dont mess with the tit once its in, it will snap right off.

ok dokey.

New question. Since I am gthis far, i am going to replace my power valve. it had 2 round gaskets with a triangular hole. however this new powervalve just has a round gasket. Is that fine to just use the new round gasket and chuck the two triangular ones?

Well looks like I put it all back together right. let's see if it works and hopefully won't catch fire.

Well it runs. Backfires out of the carb like crazy when i hit the gas and sometimes while I let off.

This was the power valve I was told to use, so that should have helped with the unholy richness smell that I have been getting lately. no change there.

I am hoping that little piece of steel around the power valve will protect it from being blown out by the backfires like the old one did.

Do I risk a drive around town to see if it will keep running on a drive. I'm a gluton for punishment, so why not!

Thanks for the help guys. here goes.

Power valve is supposed to have one gasket only. Dont overtighten it.

Jim I was laughing when you said Hope it doesnt catch on fire. We both know what happens then.
Have you rebuilt the carb?

Was it running ok before the clear piece broke off? If so it sounds like a piece of plastic got into the carb.

It's caught on fire a few times when i first got it, so i am a little paranoid about that...

It was running ~ok before the plastic peice broke off. But just Ok. Sometimes it drove stellar and sometimes it did that breathing thing at stoplights.

The pungent overwhelming richness smell has been there since I drove it to Pomona and back. the kind of smell that when people pull up to you at the light, they give you a dirty look like you're single handedly responsible for destroying the rain forrest.

Right now it seems to hesitate. If I give it some gas, instead of going Vroooooooom, it goes v v v v vvvvro oooooooooom.

As for rebuilding the carb, my time in that area and remaining light did not permit it. So I ended up cleaning the primary bowl, the block between the primary and the base (where the power valve goes), replacing the power valve with a 4.5, replaced the gaskets, replaced the pink plug and diaphram on the bottom of the primary bowl that goes to the accelerator linkage and replacing the needle seat and adjustment nut and washers on the primary bowl.

I left the jets alone and did not touch them at all.

Now to figure out this and to find out how my oil level went from Full ro Add a Quart since Pomona. I threw in a quart of Valvolin Durablend 20w 50 to keep it lubricated.

Jim you should come over here and put a 600 holly on the car. I have one lying around just to see if alot of your trouble clears up. I promised the carb to a friend of Rons but we could install it and run it up and down the freeway to test. Im not saying that is the correct carb because its not, but if it runs alot better we will know you need carb work. Ron seems to think that is a problem.

That would be awesome...

Since I never really finished timing with my distributor, I think i should get that knocked out first. Wether it be a slipped balancer or other snafu... it is time to get it fixed once and for all. i will be dedicating this week to that.

Once that is working how it should, I will move onto the carb, changing the plugs and gaping them, running new wires via my under header kit and figuring out the carb.

If I can get all these things knocked out, i figure my car should have a marked noticable improvement.

Not to mention, as it sits now, i doubt I could make it out to Pas.

I propose........

A group of us LA guys have a Sat or Sun get together and spend the day going over Jims car checking off the laundry list of issues to see if we can help this guy out. \

Seriously, anyone game?

Or, we could just dismantle it on Chevy fan attic's front lawn, he's a nice guy and wont mind, will ya buddy ol pal? :hurray: :clonk::D
