Hi All!!
Got an oddball Coding on my Mouse Engine. Block casting #384952 - 1964-68
283 cu.in with a date code of E155 (May15,1965) In My 1964 El-Camino in which l was told was a matching #'s car.? The production date on the Camino is 06C, 3rd week of June '64. The stamped block
Suffix code for this Engine is F0517GF ? Trying to research this tells me it's
a `1964 -6cyl Manual ? My Vin # on the Car 45680k states it was born a custom V8 set up. This Car is a Code L fisher plate factory 4 speed but these engine blk suffix stamps have me baffled?? My Question to our Members is, has any of us experienced these so called " non compatible #'s" and can you help me in figuring out this puzzle
thanks gang

Chevrolet By The Numbers lists the "GF" suffix as 65 Passenger car (Impala, Biscayne, etc.) 283/195 with a Powerglide trans.

Hey thanks Rick
Mmmmmmm...would one asume that though the Car is a Mid '64 build would it have the '65 engine in it??? doesn't seem likely but l was told within a few months of each build and year it was possible??
any comments all?? interesting... this is an original black plate california vehicle Mmmmm

Not likely Dug. First, that engine is for a 65 Imp. Second, Your car was built 11 months before the engine. Engines are normally built a week to a month before the car.

If your body date is the 3rd week of June, 1964 it definately wouldn't have an engine built in May of 1965 (11 months later) and the engine wouldn't have been destined for a passenger car (GF) and wound up in your El Camino.

Engine suffix codes were often used for more than one year and, as in this case, on different engines. The 64 Chevelle used GF on the 6-cyl engine but that's the only year/engine in the Chevelle line. The full size passenger car used GF in 55 on the 265 V8, 57, 65, 66, and 67 on the 283 V8 according to my references.

The seller's version of 'numbers matching' apparently only went as far as casting numbers; certainly not date-correct parts or even Chevelle parts.

Thank you all for this valuable information, though a true matching #'s car is
irrelevent to me because this truely is not a valid collector vehicle. What the #@$#%$^% am l saying it's a early 2nd gen. mostly unmolested chevelle elky!!!!!!!
At the time of purchase l knew it had a '65 blk in it, but not from a impala/Biscayne etc. No biggie she's my baby and you have to love it for what it is!!!!!!!!
true car nut
all you guys are the best
