: What now...???

OK guys here is the next item in what is sure to be a laundry list of self imposed problems. I installed full floor pans from a source other than our sponsor or Goodmark. They did not fit that well and I installed them with a overlap, welding them on the inside of the car and leaving the undercar welding till later. Well, later happened over the weekend. I started to weld the other side of the overlap, and low and behold all the welding I did inside started to come apart where I had ground it down to make it look better. It jsut tore the welds loose. So I says..."what the heck" I will try and butt weld the thing....I cut the original floor back (instead of the new metal) and I burned right thru. It seems that when ground down the welds for appearance sake, I ground the new pans down to about paper thin. I have only started to try the butt weld method....the fit is not great...should I try to "just fix it" and call it good ....or by them nice new pans that Goodmark has for the '66. By the way did I say the original fit of these pans from NPD...(oops!!!!4#@#)was not very good to start with....

Any Ideas..?? sorry for the long post..and I hope I was clear enough..

TIA..

Without seeing any pictures my first thought would be that you are going to have to start over. If you cut out the old metal, and now ground down the new metal too thin, you will haveto cut out all of the new metal that is too thin. That is going to leave you with a huge gap that will no be able to be filled. So if it was my car I would bite the bullet and buy some good panels from Goodmark.

sounds to me like you are getting too much heat build up (warpage) to cause the old welds to pull apart. Are you running a continious bead or just spot welding while moving around the pan to give the previous weld time to cool?

I think the reason is a little of both for the metal pulling apart....I am not a very patient person when it comes to weldong.j I was running spots and short beads but doing an area about 18 inches long in about 10 minutes or so. I think the main reason it pulled was that I had ground down my weld to blend the new and old panel together, and thinned it out right at the junction of the two pieces. I think I am going to get a littel more overtime and buy some new floors from goodmark.
