Jeeezus....have't they heard of pump braking and studded tires? You can see them do all the classic errors when driving on a ice covered road, locking brakes and locking the weels eithet full right or full left. I can see the bodyrepair shop managers rub one's hands in theese conditions:noway:

Man, I don't trust most people to put their gas cap on properly, let alone a set of snow chains ;)

I do know in WA state, they can use studded snows during the winter. Dad forgot to put his on, so he stayed home :)

Most of those vehicles have anti-lock brakes so pumping them will not help. A good snow tire today is probably better then a studded tire, they stick to ice. My wifes car can go places my truck cannot go in 2 wheel drive.

That first SUV in the clip was in full panic mode, stiff armed on the wheel and the gas was floored. You can see the carbon blow out of the exhaust when it darted across the street ans the rear tires were spinning about 80 mph. 40% bad road 60% bad driver there!

Problem is people think because that have AWD and Antilock brakes they can drive like it's an 80 degree sunny day....

I think we can still use studded tires about 4 months out of the year during cold weather!

AND they work great!

I used to keep several "belt-on" pairs of chains in my trunk years ago that also worked very well.

Had to watch them tho and not go too fast, plus I always tried to drive in the snow to keep the hard road from wearing them down too fast..

I agree. It drives me nuts when its slippery and I have 4x4's flying past me. They need to realize that 4x4 does nothing for you when you try to stop!

The first vehicles you see in the ditch every winter will without exeption be 4x4's. But most people think that 4WD will make you totally immortal, and that you can do 70 mph on the highway just like on a nice summer day.

In many cases it's actually easier to handle a 4WD vehicle in 2WD once you get rolling, and going down the highway in 4WD can be pretty dangerous. If you give it too much throttle, all four can break loose at the same time and send you to the ditch before you even know it.

And the vehicle will most likely be a Ford Explorer... Sorry to you decent drivers out there but the Explorer seems to be the butthole vehicle of choice...

Minnesota outlawed studded tires back in the late 60's the bastards! They were the slickest thing since sliced bread. Unfortunately they chewed up the brand new freeways.

What I love to see is a FWD car with snow tires on the rear only. That always gets a belly laugh out of me. You'd be amazed at how often you see that in snow country.

Oregon still allows aluminum, fast wearing studs Nov-Mar. I believe chains were required on the day the first vid occurred in PDX. BTW the dude had a nasty gash on his head. My bet is on one of the first contacts his air bag deployed and knocked him silly. At least I hope that is part of his excuse anyways :) Lots of banged up cars during that day for bodyshops to fix. I stay home when we have that type of weather here. No sense in risking hardware.

The person that was driving should get arrested and license revoked for ever. I could see the first little accident, but all that carnage after the initial impact????

Did anyone take the time to count how many things that they "pinballed" off of, or contributed to???

Guess I better go see the video again.... not that I mind, thats some funny stuff

I had no choice to be out in the snow and during blizzards and it never ceased to amaze me the morons out there... Has to be embarrassing getting pushed out in your AWD SUV by a RWD car....

Yeah.....I know....superior huh?;)
I saw the clip again and I alsow notised the cloud of carbon coming out of the first car....I know it's not nice of me but I had to laugh...PANIC!!
But I'm a bit supprised that som of the states has banned studded tires, aren't you supposed to have a car wich is outfited for all types of weather?

I'm from Sweden, so I have had my fair share of cold winters. Driving in snow is not that big of a deal to me, but some people here in TN seem to be totally unaware to some very basic winter driving techniques. It's pretty funny to watch them sometimes, even if many of them are downright dangerous. And you can't even find studded tires here. Right after I moved here, I went to a tire shop and asked. The guy just looked at me funny and said: "You call it what now?". That was pretty much the reply I got in any shop, so I finally gave up.

I don't really know what the law says about studded tires here, but I do know that chaos and mayhem breaks out when we get 1/4" or so of snow. A good thing about it is that no one will blaim you if you don't come to work. Just look out the window in the morning and then call the office and tell them that it's impossible to drive, that's it. :D

I agree! I've seen TN snowstorms on TV..... :)

It happens here too. I'll never forget Christmas about 4 years ago. There was some fresh snow, and it was a little slippery, but not that bad. My brother and 2 of my friends were on our way to a party and cam across a pizza delivery guy who slid onto the shoulder and was stuck in the drift. We decided to show a little holiday spirit and push him out. The pizza guy (definately not a MI native) was driving and would just floor it, and we were getting nowhere pushing. He literally had no throttle control besides on-gas, off-gas. He didn't understand the concept of rocking the car either.... I kicked him out, and I drove the car while everybody pushed. In about 20 seconds, we had his car on the side of the road, ready to go. We piled back into the truck and had gotten no more than a couple hundred feet down the road.... you could see the pizza guy had immediately gotten in his car again, and floored it, spinning around wildly , and back into the drift he went. :clonk: What part of "don't floor it" is so hard to get??? :)

I don't believe you. You won't be able to see it, unless you have a 78" high-definition TV. :D

LOL:D :D I had a guy from Turkey who came to the cable plant where I work to pick up som products, and he was terrified! He had never seen snow before (just on the tv;) ) and he too had the "no throttle, full throttle" function in his foot

Actually I believe it was ICE, not snow.
It doesn’t matter what you do on a grade on ice it ain’t gonna help cause you can’t steer or brake at all.
The only thing that will help is don’t get on the ice in the first place.
