I am starting to buy some painting supplies for my Chevelle so when spring comes, I'll be ready.
I plan on using PPG DBC BC/CC system. I was all set on getting a gallon of K38 primer, but the guy at the paint store suggested ncp 270 primer. He said with my body panels being in such good shape, I don't need the ultra high build K38, plus he said since the ncp270 is red, and I will be using Midnight Bronze paint, it will cover better and I don't need a sealer. What do the pro's think?

Thanks!

I dont really care for the NCP primers, mainly cus I think they sand like crap, but otherwise they are a good product. They have better fill then K36 but to me NCP sands like half dried glue it eats sandpaper like you cant believe graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Am not sure on my product numbers but you WANT TO MAKE sure to DONT get the transparnet or clear NCP primer. I think the number is NCP280 its NOT a good product, just so you KNOW

Is the ncp 270 primer an epoxy primer like the DP50LF ? If so it is not a sandable primer and will be a PIA.

NCP is not an epoxy, it is an "iso free" urethane type product. I have only used it a few times but I can say it was a product when I was reping that was stiff compitition. There were a lot of people out there that loved it.
I felt from my experiance it was a darn good product. I was hoping I would find that it sucked so I could sell against it, but found just the opposite, it was very good.

Thanks guys, smile.gif

I really appreciate all your opinions, I think I'll try a quart first and give it a try and if I like it I'll buy a gallon.

Mike, hopefully I didnt give ya the wrong impression about the NCP270. It is a great product but when compared to other urethane type of primers it sands HARD. Ncp270/271 has great adhesion, probably the best of any surfacer Ive used

The ONLY reason we dont use it at our shop is cus it sands hard. I like NCP271(gray) MUCH better then K36 but k36 is a very easily sandable primer.

The NCP primers are labeled corrosion resistant primer surfacers. Basically they are meet so you can apply your corrosion resistant primer and primer surfacer in one easy step instead of two steps.

Now would I prime an entire fender that is BARE metal, NO as it has a recommendation in the tech sheet for etch primer for MAX performance. But on small little bare metal spots, yeah!!

I think NCP270/271 is a great product other then it sands like a Bastard.

No, I understand where your coming from. When I was about 18 (25 years ago), I worked as a painters helper at a body shop, so I know why you would prefer a product, with all else being equal, that is easier to use, especially when you do it for a living.

Thanks again for your expert info. Things sure have changed in the paint department and even though I have shot a few cars in my day with excellent results, it has always been with laquer or enamel. This will be my first with bc/cc and an HLPV gun and I want to get it right. I am confident I will with all the pro's on this site!
