: 1971 Chevelle LS6
ron moquin Jan 21st, 07, 5:42 PM I would like information that anyone has on a 1971 Chevelle LS6, 454 ci, 425hp. Does anyone know the casting number for the correct head and block?
Also, if there are any books available on this car I that would be helpful.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks ... Ron

Dean Jan 21st, 07, 5:45 PM Don't think there ever was an LS6 Chevelle in 71
BlueSS454 Jan 21st, 07, 5:56 PM There was never a 71 LS6 Chevelle released to the public, doesn't mean there were not any built :).
mmurphy77 Jan 21st, 07, 6:25 PM Any casting/part numbers for a '71 LS6 would be from a Corvette as they were cancelled for the Chevelle.

I have visited this website before, however I was not a member. I do not own a Chevelle, however I did own a '68 SS 396 El Camino at one time, Matador red with black bucket interior, center console automatic with factory gauge instruments, including tachometer.
My first real involvment came about when I purchased my first Corvette in 1987, a 1970 coupe with a transplanted CRR coded '70 Chevelle engine. Needless to say I was very impressed with this powerplant. I later found out it was very worn out, so I had it rebuilt to stock specifications, with only a 0010. overbore as its only modification from GM specs. On the engine dyno with Corvette exhaust manifolds and A.I.R system, it dynoed to the equivalent of 493hp in stock form.
My real interest lies in factory stock muscle, hence my search for the 3rd ultimate big block early shark, behind the '69 ZL-1 & L-88. I currently own 2 '71 LS-6 coupes, factory original paint, interiors & drivetrains, both documented with factory paperwork.
Looking forward to talking with other LS-6 Chevelle owners interested in knowing differences between the two models.
According to the book, "Chevrolet by the numbers 1970-75"....
The engine block casting number is #3963512.........
The cylinder head casting number is #3994026.........
You can PM, 71 LS-6, maybe he can verify these numbers, since he owns [2] 1971 LS6 Corvette's.......Don.
Tonawanda records indicate that [14] 1971 LS6 engines were assembled for Chevelle applications
(10 - automatic /and/ 4 - manual).
However, there is ZERO evidence that any of those motors made it into private hands.
RedSS454 Jan 21st, 07, 7:54 PM There was at least one LS6 Chevelle built for the '71 model year, but it was a pre-production magazine test car. I don't know how it ever ended up, but it did exist. Imagine what that would be worth today?

Have a read of this thread. The mag article is part way through the thread/.
Everyone would love to see the documentation of the 2 71 LS-6's as that may help put the rumour to bed.
71 LS-6 Jan 21st, 07, 9:17 PM Guys,
I have never owned a Chevelle. I currently have 2 1971 LS6 Corvette coupes. I am interested in talking with fellow '70 LS6 Chevelle owners, because it was unique for Chevrolet to have two different incarnations of the 454 be labeled using the same RPO designation.
Although these engines are similar, there are many differences. Carburetors, exhaust manifolds, heads, distributors, waterpumps, ignition set ups, clutches, pistons, oil pans, etc.
LevonH Jan 21st, 07, 10:41 PM The post you made that referenced the 2 LS-6 Coupes missed a key word... Corvette  Folks here jumped to the conclusion that you meant Chevelle :noway:
It is clearer now :hurray:
Chevy 70 SS vert Jan 22nd, 07, 12:31 AM I wondered too! for at least a minute.

Ron,
Here is an ebay listing that continues to perpetuate the '71 LS6 Chevelle myth and misrepresent the truth on '71 LS6 Corvettes as well.
