: Some Question for Trunk Floor Installers
Madmax Nov 25th, 00, 8:08 PM I've got a 67 that I'm going to be replacing the complete trunk floor. I've got a couple question for you guys/gals. I've done a search and found that the seven piece replacement kits are the way to go. But there was not enough information on how to do it.
1) I've talked myself into trying to replace my trunk floor myself (not a bodyman but have worked in the field before and willing to try welding) is this possible if I take my time and practice welding on junk metal?
2) Is the trunk floor spot welded in? If so is there framing under it that maybe rusty too and how did you remove the old trunk floor? Cut it in half?
3) How is the seam finish off (where each panel meet each other) between the three piece trunk replacement units welded together or just spot welded?
I may have more question when I can think of them.
And Thanks for the help in advance Tom

micky69396 Nov 26th, 00, 5:27 PM I would try to fit them so they are together and not overlapping, weld up both sides (top and under) grind off excess and finish. It is how I do floor pans, etc., and once it is finished off you will never be able to tell it was repaired. Only use what you need on the panel no more, no less.
BAD415 Nov 26th, 00, 5:31 PM My trunk floor was welded at the seams and then filled over with body filler.
ToocoolZ28 Nov 26th, 00, 6:25 PM I cut mine out a piece at a time, just kept nibbling away at it. When I put it back in I started at each side and tacked those pieces in, then cut the center section to fit. I butt welded all the joints, didnt over lap it at all. The trunk floor supports may be rusted too, you will see them when you try to separate the floor from the supports, they are spot welded together and need to be cut apart.
If you can weld at all you should be able to do this yourself since all the welds will be ground smooth anyway and you probably will have to use some body filler on the joints anyway.
Good luck

The support that you refer to do you mean the body mount supports? (where the trunk floor bolts to the frame) Or is there other supports that can't be seen until the trunk floor is out?
Also body mount bushing should I replace them in the front half of the car then as I replace the section of trunk floor put them in as I go??
Thanks Tom

ToocoolZ28 Nov 27th, 00, 6:08 PM Hey Tom, there are supports under the trunk floor that dont come with the new pans. The sheet metal floor is spot welded to them, you can get them if yours are rusted. You will have to separate the floor pans from these supports if you want to save them. They are in the middle area of the trunk floor. As far as the body supports I cant help you there.

I've never seen these supports listed in any of my chevelle catalogs. Where would I get them from? Also do these supports run from side to side or front to back in the trunk pan area?
Again Thanks For the help!

CReM@$TeR Nov 28th, 00, 8:04 PM I've seen the two supports running front to back for the gas tank, they have them in catalogs, but I haven't seen the body mount supports which run side to side. There is a rear one on my '65 Chevelle, right above the rear framerail, and there is one right crossing over above the coil spring perches on the frame. Where do you get those, 'cause if I have to reuse mine, I'm gonna have to make my own. The only ones like it I have seen are the main compartment floor braces, but not trunk floor braces.

WayneK Nov 30th, 00, 9:01 AM Cool site Bing. ( love them early rides)
as for the rear trunk brace that sits on the cross frame rail and the front upper floor brace the mounts on the coil spring perch pads. your on you own. the front one is not hard to make if you have access to a good metal brake. bit he rear one is a challenge. read donor car ?
