Hello, I have been sitting on this 69 chevelle that we have owned for nearly 18 years. always kept it inside. we were told it possibly was an ss. it had some ss items on it when we bought it such as ss steering wheel, ss door panels, ss dash, factory tach, sway bars, and we were told only supersports came with plastic inner fenders.
now from the looks of things it is not a super sport, it is classified as a chevelle sport coupe. without a motor or transmission, or interior. we only paid $700. for it
soooo, now were perplexed. should we build a ss clone or restore it to the original colors and or make a street car out of it. I built a smallblock lt1 clone and am going to put it in.
A friend says get rid of it and buy another which can be certified as an ss. others say slam it shave it and go totally custom.
it doesnt have a plate on the door jamb so we cant tell what it is except for the 13637 vin number. and the cowl tag which is what brought the bad news. it doesnt elude to anything ss. says it was built in fremont.
the car was in a accident once and has a green nose under the primer. I realized 69 ss models dont come with automatic on the column long ago. we had a friend who had a 71 ss 350 with auto on the column, and bench seat.
so what to do, the original colors were butternut yellow with white interior and white vinyl top. it could be nice with some chrome wheels. or a bright blue metalic with black interior. I think i'd like to continue on. my intent was never to sell it.
I'd appreciate the input. for now i'll call it a clone. later, mike

build it,clone it,drive it,race it,show it,put blood sweat & tears in it. but most of all have FUN with it. (i would never put a LT1 in a chevelle) JMO.

Bottom line as mentioned is do what you want to the car and enjoy but.....you might want to investigate more with the car to determine if it in fact was an SS body. Many threads here ID where build sheets could be hidden and although most of the SS parts can be installed one can potentially make a determination on the possibility of the body having been an original SS body. The springs might still have the tag, some springs are specific to the RPOs L34/L35. Additionally, you may find a build sheet, the "Holy Grail", that confirms it is an original SS. ultimately you must choose what to do but if it were me and you are considering changing it anyway..why not search it for more info....just my thoughts...good luck and have fun. Sent you a PM also. Andy

Without a build sheet or other paper documentation, I don't think anyone can ever be truly certain that a 69 was not an SS if there isn't anything obvious like "Malibu" emblem holes in the quarters, fender side marker holes, 1/4" fuel line (to name a few).

People make way tooooo much out of the SS.
What is the purpose of the car? Why are you doing it?
Are you going to the Chevelle Nationals to take on Don Lightfoot and some of the others from here on team Chevelle? Not me. You looking to make a dollar, then good luck.
SS ok I got one, but a well done Chevelle Malibu or El Camino will draw as much attention with or without the SS from me anyday. I look at the craftsmenship put into a car not the little letters on it. Build it, drive it, enjoy it, then pass it on to the children!!

Nothing you said says it's not an SS anyway. But I would clone it if it was mine anyway.

I was wondering , if the SS was an option does that make it a clone if you install everything that was included on that option , such as , say you take a car without power steering and add everything required to make the p[ower steerign work , pump, steering box , hoses etc. , does that make it a power steering clone car, or just make it a non factory istalled option car? I mean after all they both are options , :-D

first off a vin number that starts with 135-13637 = 2-DOOR SPORT COUPE, 5-PASSENGER malibu
so in 69 it was the first year that the SS package was a option for a 300 deluxe or malibu cars.not like in earlier years when the vin started with 138 you knew you had a true SS car.65-68
now if you have had the car for 18+ years that would also lead me to believe its a true SS.i know it happened but most people did not clone these back then because there where alot of them around for pretty cheap price.i feel that its done more now because of all the cheap after market parts out there and that the cars now bring in big $$$$$$.
now i to have a fremont car that i have had for 21 years now.it has a 13637 vin, plastic fenders and a automatic on the column.with all the SS trim inside and out, astro air,PS and PB.by looking closer i can find a 3/8 fuel line with a return line(big block),12 bolt and F40 suspension (Front sway bar and Rear braces on diff).not all SS had automatics with a console and buckets seats or 4 speeds for that matter.most of them did but not all.many of the fremont cars that i have seen have the plastic inner fenders and why other plants use steel ones like on the east coast is beyond me.you would think it would be the other way around with all the salt on the roads but not the case.
so when you start your resto of the old girl you just might find her birth certificate (buildsheet) hidden some where.that lists your 13637 malibu with the SS package options.Bingooooooooooo
if not there is no one here with what you have stated that can say for SURE.that what you have is NOT a TRUE SS.......
and i think you DO.......

Good point. When I was building '55-57 Chevy's and was a member of the Classic Chevy Club, I saw many cars in their magazine that the owners had stated they added a continental kit or power steering, or the power pack. These were all options and option packages and I never heard anyone complain that so and so's car didn't come from the factory with that!
They just enjoyed their cars.

Hello guys, I agree with the idea about enjoying the car. the only part of the original interior left are the door panels and back seat, which i put away years ago and now cant wait to get my hands on it. I appreciate all the input. gave me some food for thought. regards, mike

I think a Butternut Yellow, White bucket/console interior, White vinyl top with raised White Letter tires and a White SS stripe would not only look clean and crisp, but would be relatively unique and definately refreshing in a sea of Marina Blue Chevelles.

I don't think I've ever seen one in that exact combination.

I bet she'd be pretty.

(i would never put a LT1 in a chevelle)LT-1 or LT1? I like my LT1... the 13.8 on street tires, and 24mpg with 3.08s makes the car very enjoyable. :)
