: Ground Up vs. Year One for floors and trunk pan

I need to buy new floor pans and trunk floor, and am looking at both my Year One and my Ground Up catalogs.

I'm looking at full pans for the front left and right, and the full pan for the rear seat. Also looking at the full kit for the trunk (left, center, right and the supports).

Ground Up is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, and says they can ship UPS oversize. Not only is Year One higher on the parts, they want to ship it all via truck, which is more expensive I would guess.

Here's the breakdown on costs from the catalogs:

Full front floor pans -- Year One $220 for the pair, Ground Up $190 for the pair.

Rear pan -- Year One $195, Ground Up $110

Trunk kit -- Year One $389, Ground Up $270

Total -- Year One $804, Ground Up $570. Year One is 41% higher

Any comments on the relative quality of the parts? Are they all the same, or do they source from different manufacturers?

Everything being equal, I'd prefer to support the sponsor of this site which has helped me so much.

Any other suggestions?

Bought the new floorpans (and floorpan brace) from Ground Up, seemed to fit pretty good, although I had a couple of minor fitment issues on the pass side (which may be my fault and not the pan's). I'd definitely go through them next time I needed floor pans.

Trunk pan and rear seat pan I got elsewhere (forget the name of the place, it was the one that the Ausley's guy started - Chevroletrestorationworld.com or similar). Also fit pretty good.

Quarters I picked up at a swapmeet for 82 bucks for the pair  . These too fit great.

So... either I'm really lucky, or I don't know the difference between good and bad fit, heh. Not sure how much all this helps though.

I buy most all of my parts from MUSCLE FACTORY, they are always excellent quality and significantly cheaper. Just purchased full right and left floor pans for $180 from my local guy..brand new, excellent quality. I have always found Year One to be way out of line price wise.

I will let you know about the rear seat pan. I haven't started installing it yet, but the quality looks good. I won't know about the fit until I actually get the old one out and start fitting the new one in place.

Even though they are not on your list I used floors and trunk from Paddock. the reason I choose them was because they offered the only floor that included the tranny tunnel. Yearone, ground up, or goodmark didnt offer a FULL FLOOR. Their floors are all cut short of the tunnel meaning you will have to splice it down the length of floor on both sides. Paddock floors meet in the middle of the tunnel, only one splice down the floor not two.

On the trunk I bought the two piece design instead of the three. The 2 piece was a bit easier to fit to each other, less welding.

All my parts fit great. But just keep this in mind... ALL AND ANY PART(S) will need to be tweaked in someway to fit properly to YOUR car. I dont care if the part is NOS, used or aftermarket it WILL need to be tweaked to fit right...period...Eric

Year One has one of the best looking most informative catalogs and I truly believe you pay for that. I certainly could be wrong but I also believe most of the parts originate from very few sources. Just my thoughts. (also agree Muscle Factory is tops)

How did your guys trunk panels fit on the outer edges, near the quarter filler? Can someone post pics showing this area?

Old trunk floor is out, and the new 7 piece kit is being fitted to go back in. It's not done yet, so no pictures.

Bad news is that my trunk extension filler panels are rotted, and need to be replaced. :( Just ordered a set from Year One.

Good news is that there was another build sheet on top of the gas tank. :D Much better shape than the one I found behind the rear seat!

I bought the 7 piece trunk set from Ground Up. I thought the fit was pretty good, although I think the body shop could have done a little better with the seams. When I have the trunk mat over it, I'm happy with it :D

Here's apic after I panited it...

What I was really trying to figure out was, after buying the 7 piece trunk kit from ground up, along with the extension fillers, and it looks like the outer edge of the pan is too wide and does not sit right on the extension. I was wondering if maybe I had to trim the outer pans to fit down on the extensions.

Jerryr,
Were the pans welded to the inner wheel housings, or just gone over with a sealer?

Dhawks,
If it looks too big, it probably is. Most of these places stamp and leave some "extra" to allow you to trim and fit them in.

Dhawks you have to remember that these cars are 30+ years old. No 2 cars are built the same nor are parts. It DOES NOT matter if the part is NOS, used, aftermarket or homemade, some tweaking-adjustment will be needed to fit YOUR car properly.

That said, I bought the 2 piece from paddock very happey with them. I did need to tweak the pans a bit in shape where they meet the exts. The curves didnt match, so out came the hammer and dolly. Beofre you start cutting out metal you might want to see if all it needs is some hammer work. Alot easier to remove metal then it is to add metal back on...Eric

JerryR, I can see why you are not happy with the seems. That shop did outstanding work graemlins/thumbsup.gif
