: why why why????????????
Mr69 Jan 20th, 07, 5:00 AM Why do people put these ugly steering wheels in their Chevelles? This has to be the ugliest steering wheel ever. With it's cheasy rivets in the wood rim. Looks like the wheel off a boat. And the extra cheasy center horn button. C'mon. These steering wheels don't even look good in a dune buggy. Looks like something out of an AMC gremlin. This interior would look great, but this steering wheel just ruins it. WHY ??? Is it because they can't afford to buy a real wood steering wheel?
2cool Jan 20th, 07, 5:29 AM I like those wheels besides the redwood wheel was offered by the factory and now run around $400 on bay.
troutdog Jan 20th, 07, 5:43 AM Is the glass half full or half empty?
74bowtie Jan 20th, 07, 6:04 AM I like them also, I have one in my Chevelle but I did change the horn button to a factory wood steering wheel horn button.
philbay Jan 20th, 07, 8:18 AM me too.. be careful, you know what they say..."opinions are like ---holes, everyone has one. maby two?.. phil
whats wrong with that wheel?...for a factory unit, its pretty rightious...maybe from a vette?
lol, now i enlarged it, is it a GM wheel?, and whats with the sky blue center?
....at least its not chain :)
snowtrav Jan 20th, 07, 8:37 AM I don't like them either, they look out of place with the interior.
MrBill66Malibu Jan 20th, 07, 9:15 AM Gentleman and Ladies,
Lets remember, this is a hobby and everyone has a right to do with their car as they please. If you have something nice to say, tell the owner. If not, keep it to yourself. Someone may not like what YOU have done to your car and it does hurt to hear it. JMHO

Atleast they are real wood, I think the OE wheels were imitation plastic rosewood? (they look plastic to)
I was thinking of redoing one of these wheels using "real rosewood stain" and putting it on my car.
I would save myself 4-5 hundred dollars and get the same or better look as a OE wheel.
T.C.
Professor_SS Jan 20th, 07, 11:11 AM I like it also, I have a similar one in my car, with a less "cheasy" center cap. Don't like, so what, my car, not yours.
BTW, whats wrong with a AMC gremlin? Ever driven one? I'd like to have a V8 powered one. Neat little car.
BillsCamino Jan 20th, 07, 11:37 AM I'd rather see that wheel than some 40 yr old plastic one that's cracked in 6 places.
Dean Jan 20th, 07, 11:46 AM why why why????????????
Different strokes for different folks.
Sometimes people have to settle for something close that they can afford at the time.

bad66 Jan 20th, 07, 12:03 PM Not everyone can afford barret- jackson looking cars, good thing too,Variety is the spice, Just because someone can't afford or want a high dollar car, you shouldn't look down you nose at them. Although those trailer queens are nice to look at, I prefer the cars at the local cruise in, built by the owner who has a budget.
Andy69 Jan 20th, 07, 12:35 PM That one looks 1000% better than those stupid Autozone Grant steering wheels you see all the time.

Haha...that's what my wheel looks like. I can't decide if the cracks were due to shrinkage, or if the wheel came from the factory that way...
Can someone throw me a bone?

Tom's 68 Jan 20th, 07, 4:26 PM I think the original rosewood wheels looked nice
also the original plastic ones looked ok
I really prfer the steering wheels they used in the mid 70's camaros, I have an original plastic one that is in nice shape - but I will probably just leave it in the box it is in right now
as for why, why, why - same reason some people jack the back end way up in the air. Or how some people like to paint flames on their cars
to each his own

Les Saville Jan 20th, 07, 6:44 PM I'm not going to pre judge anyone's reasoning but if you take your original wheel with six cracks in it and fill those with JB weld, spend 20 hours sanding, priming and painting you have a brand new looking wheel.
So how much time are you willing to play in this hobby? JB weld is a few bucks.;)

Ahhh -- the anonymity of the Internet. How many of the people making negative remarks here would even think about doing so face-to-face? Funny thing is, I've only been lurking here for about four months and have identified several people that I've actually met in person, or have been in very close proximity to at one time or another. Just something to think about.

dscabra Jan 20th, 07, 8:17 PM What are the options for something other than a stock steering wheel? I would love to replace the standard wheel in my 71 Malibu.
The sky is pretty much the limit. As long as you are able to buy a hub adapter that will mate the wheel of your choosing to the steering column. Most after market wheel manufactures have a standard pattern on their wheels, and some are interchangeable. Pick your wheel, and then buy the appropriate adapter. If you are looking for a stock-looking wheel, take a look at OPG or other parts retailer specializing in your model of car. You can always get crazy and have a custom designed wheel made from billet aluminum, and can even have it done to match your wheels if that's something you like.

And heres why, when its 115 degrees in the shade and you leave the car in the sun those metal rivets get to be HOT. I use to spread my fingers to miss the rivets, and it made for some funny stares. I finally just threw a towel over the wheel in the summer. At least I could jump in and drive it without driving gloves. Jim

Bill,
Luckily I think most folks realize when they may have crossed a TC line and usually don't do it again. When a forum grows as large as this one has it will always have some folks that just don't understand it's not cool to criticize (in public) someone else's taste.

DId anyone see the latest HOT ROD issue with the Citroen that had a BAD A.. GM motor in it? the Citroen wheel ruled on that one.. and it is original..
bluechevelless Jan 20th, 07, 11:36 PM Ive got the Grant 969, Its the same as the wooden one, just with a black cushion grip and no wood. I really like it, its very comfortable and looks great. Im not a big fan of the cheezy horn button cause its very rough stainless steel (kinda like brushed aluminum) Id like to change it out to a chrome piece that says SS 396 instead. Would a factory button interchange?
Its better than what I did have, and yes that does say "Citation"

I'm not critisizing any one persons tastes. I just don't see what people see in this steering wheel. It looks like it would be good to use to steer a boat. But surely not a Chevelle. In this particular picture, it looks so out of place, I can't believe that more people don't agree with me.
yes yes to each his/her own. But c'mon guys, this wheel is just way ugly.
I see them on ebay all the time going for big bucks and I just can't fathom what people see in this "boat" steering wheel.
I would rather have a simulated plastic wheel with 6 cracks before I put this ugly thing in my car. It's got JCWhitney all over it.
I guess it's the extra thick wood and the el cheapo rivets that really turns me off. I'd rank it right there with the chain link steering wheel. same same.
Do your car a favor and burn that thing.
heck the aftermarket 3 spoke wheels are only $200
why are people paying $180 for this ugly riveted thing?
Doesn't it belong in a 1970's custom Dodge van with drapes in the windows?
That's my story, and I'm stickin to it.

Gee I dunno Scott you really crossed the line that one time ;)
I just think those Grant, or most aftermarket wheels for that matter, look like they don't belong, which is why I don't like them. Sort of like cutting off your thumb and grafting it on your forehead. It's the same reason I don't like aftermarket seats, or shifters. I'm not crazy about the aftermarket guages I installed in my 69 either. Unless you design the interior in its entirety so everything looks good and works well together, it just looks wrong. Call me an originalisist, or whatever the word is...

Nate,
You are entitled to your opinion. The picture of the car in your post could be a member. How would you feel if your car was picked apart on this forum? I know personally I would not like it. Did that person ask for your opinion? If they did then that is a different story and should have been written in your post.
There are many things I see on other cars that I would not put on mine and visa versa. The difference is I keep those things that I do not like to myself.
Just read what you have written "Do your car a favor and burn that thing" That's a pretty strong statement. The reason more people don't agree with you is obvious. It's because some like it and some don't. The reason you are getting so much heat is because you choose to make a negative comment on someone else's tastes and no one asked you for it. I would love to see pictures of your car and if you did post them I would hold true to my conviction that I would not say anything negative about it!!!!
