: '67 Chevelle dash housing
scooter67 Jul 12th, 02, 8:11 PM I have some pretty bad rust where the dash housing meets the firewall under the windshield. Long story short, I need to replace the dash. I know the 66 and 67 dash pads are different, but are the dashes different also? Thanks.

more ambition than brains Jul 12th, 02, 11:36 PM It is my understanding that the cluster mounting unit is different because of the switches. However I would be VERY surprised if the welded dash panel is not the same. On my 66 elky my upper dash (welded) and the lower windshield filler to cowl have been replaced. Fairly big project, but can be done nicely. Used welded panel out of donor 66 car and repro filler from OPG. VERY time and labor intensive. Fits of filler to cowl grille, windshield side pillar caps, and windshield mouldings are critical. Karl

jrusk Jul 13th, 02, 8:08 AM the dash housings are the same, the dash pad holes are the only differance.i just put a 67 dash in a 66 out of a donor car. i had the same rust problem.
more ambition than brains Jul 13th, 02, 8:18 AM I have a cowl top, upper dash, & roof assy cut from 66 elcamino. I would have to take a very close look at it to verify the upper dash is good. Karl
scooter67 Jul 14th, 02, 3:56 PM Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I've been out in the garage all weekend. What a surprise http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif. I haven't started to look for a donor yet, but I wanted to know incase I find a good '66 if I can use it. My Dad know a guy in here in Houston that has a couple '67s that we have to check on. There is a guy in Troop, TX (somewhere around there, can't remember) that has about 300 chevelles that he is parting out. I may just have to make a day of it and drive up there. Anyway, it sounds to me that I can use the '66 if I have to. Fortunately, my dash insert for the switches, gauges, etc. is good. Sorry for being so long winded. Thanks everybody.

you need a dash for a 67? i have 1 ,mail me and let me know.
DaleM Jul 15th, 02, 12:09 AM The 66 and 67 dashes are not the same. The steering column opening is smaller on 66, larger opening on 67 for the collapsible column and the wiper switch was moved to the right about ½’ on the 67 dash. The latter being the reason the relatively common 66 dash strip can’t be used on 67 SS. Pretty sure the instrument clusters are the same, GM lists the same part number for 66/67 w/gauges (doesn't list 66 w/o gauges for some reason). Speedo bezel is the same from aftermarket suppliers and Dakota Digital lists the same number for their digital gauge setups.
If you have factory air, the internal control levers are different between 66 and 67 as well - non AC cars use the same controls.

more ambition than brains Jul 16th, 02, 12:55 AM When is a dash a dash??? Gets really confusing sometimes. Maybe we should call them UPPER DASH: (part with speaker and defroster louvers, welds to windshield filler and upper inner cowl) LOWER CLUSTER UNIT: (part containing gauges, switches, radio, and glove box, held in by screws) It would appear to me that ALL posters here are correct, depending on which part we are talking about. Actually, Chevrolet does refer to them as upper and lower dash units. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Me, I'm talking the lower unit from the headlamp/ignition/wiper switches on down...those are different between 66 and 67. The internal parts of it, the gauge panel, switches themselves, etc are mostly interchangeable.

scooter67 Jul 16th, 02, 5:57 PM I'm in need of the upper dash. I've emailed some people selling dashes and they all assume I'm talking about the lower dash unit. Knowing the terminology really helps. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Anyone in the Houston are have a '66 or '67 upper dash?
I really appreciate all of the replies. Thanks guys.
