I am trying to find out what type of grease to use in the recess area under the breaker plate of my original distributor. I have an old Delco Remy Manual that says to use Delco Remy lubricant No. 1 but does not list a part number.
Does anyone know if this grease is still available from GM or know of another brand of lubricant that is equivalent to the original grease. I am sure it has to be a thick lubricant similar to wheel bearing grease or lubriplate so it will stay in the recess of the housing.
Does anyone know the purpose of the lubricant? I am assuming it is used to dissipate heat from the upper bushing and to provide a little lubrication also.

I bet it is similar to wheel bearing or chassis grease.

Just took my original distributor all apart and cleaned and painted it. According to the book illustration and when I took it apart, there is a plastic seal then a flet washer and then the braker plate. Where does the lube your talking about go; inside the shaft housing of the breaker plate where the shaft rotates? I havent cleaned the great out; but would like to add lube if I knew what to put in there. Thanks.
I've used wheel bearing grease on the ones I've done. It's under the plastic seal. There are two tiny holes in the upper bushing that allow the grease to "ooze" out and lube the shaft. The orig grease is always dried up. I clean it all out and pack in new grease (like packing a wheel bearing) til it comes out the two tiny holes. Then install a new seal (still avail from GM I believe).

Is it possible to remove the plastic seal without damaging it, so it can be re-used? thanks.

The seal is usually brittle and ends up breaking. The seal is still availble from GM (PN 1950569) and only costs a couple bucks. Cheap insurance against grease contaminating the entire distributor assembly.
Thanks for everyone's input on this!
