: 69 SS Hood Hinges

I picked up a 69 Malibu project car. The guy who had it installed a SS hood (68 or 69 unknown but think they are the same, but may be wrong. The hood is a little raised at the hinges and the hood is not flush with the fenders. There is no other ajustment left to correct this problem. The fenders are aligned with the doors correctly so I know thats not the problem. I seem to recall there is a hinge issue when it comes to flat/SS hoods. If he used the stock 69 flat hood hinge, can that be the problem? Is there a different hinge for the SS hood?

Thanks
Randy

68 and 69 hood hinges are different and are not interchangeable with 68 and 69 hoods.

Randy,
I don't think there is any difference between the flat and SS hood hinges. There is a diff. between 68 and 69 hinges as Brian said (the 69 hinges are longer where it bolts to the hood)and they will not interchange on 68-69 hoods.
Do a search in this section for username MARTINSR. He recently posted a very helpful body panel alignment articale that will help you get the hood down in the rear.

Regards
Dwayne

The only difference between the 68 and 69 hood hinges that matters is the distance between the bolt holes where the hinge attaches to the hood

"68 only" hinges must be used with a 68 hood

69-72 hinges can be used with a 69 hood

68 hood and hinges are 12 1/4" ctr to ctr

69-72 hood and hinges are 14 5/8" ctr. to ctr.

There is no difference between the flat hood and the SS hood hinges

Loosen the "top" lower bolts on each side and have someone raise up on the front of the hood while re-tightening them

If more adjustment is needed, repeat the above process using the "bottom" lower bolts

a little bit to add to deans post:
68 had two different hinges
an early one and a late one. one was 12 1/4 and the other 12 3/4 but i can't remember which is which. i know that i have a different one for each side of my car though. so be careful if you have to order 68 hinges.

Thanks guys, you gave me some things to look into to fix the alignment problem. I even considered (for a very brief moment) changing it back to a flat hood to return it back to original but I like the look of the SS hood much better.

Thanks again!

If the back corners of the hood are high, you may be able to get proper alignment by raising the front of the hinge and lowering the rear. The mounting bolts allow some adjustment.

elkyD68 is right. There are some differences on the center to center hole location on the 1968 hood. Naturally this also means the hinges are different. You have to longate the rear slot on the hinge to make it work on both configurations of the hood. I've mentioned this to other 68 owners before and they thought I was getting confused with the 1969 hood. At last someone else recognizes the difference exists. I have five 68 Chevelles and I'm always finding differences that others didn't believe existed.
