: ZZZ Crate motor upgrade

I have a first generation zz crate motor that I'm going to be tearing down in the next couple of weeks. I have a couple of questions regarding upgrading some components. First, I wanted to upgrade the cam to the HOT cam that GM makes (218i/228e duration and .525 lift@.050) I don't know what the LSA is. Next I was thinking about Fastburn heads. Are there a better alternative? If I go with the Fastburn heads I'd probably go with an Edelbrock RPM AirGap intake for the Vortec heads. Carb would probably be a 750 Holley or Barry Grant. I'd like to be in the 425-440 Hp range.. Max RPM would be just north of 5500.

The motor is going in front of either a TH350 or a 200r4 with 3.73 rear gears. I'm interested in good power with the car being street / strip. I would like a lopey but not radical exhaust note.

Of course, roasting the tires in my first priority..

I run the HOT cam and Fast burn heads but I have a Holley Marine manifold that has been modified for a FAST EFI system. It has headman torque step headers and an Dr. Gas X pipe. The engine dyno said 430 hp and with a TKO and 3:73 rear end I get 350 RWHP.

I would go with the TH350 as it would better match the power curve of the engine. Max Revs ae 6000.

Thanks for the reply..

I forgot to ask. Does anybody know if the fastburn heads come with the heavier valve springs that are included in the ZZ hot cam kit??

yeah, the fastburn has the same LT4 springs that are used in the HOT cam kit.
those heads and that came were practically made for each other. i think those heads were probably built around that cam..
you remember the ZZ430 engine, don't you?
rated at 430 hp/430 tq. it was just a ZZ4 with fastburn heads and HOT cam, with the matching Vortec intake, of course..

You'd be right in the 430 neighborhood. The Air Gap intake is nice, and compliments everything well. LSA on the cam is 112. with 1.5" rockers, it still has 492 lift. Make sure you get 1.6 rockers like what's used in the HOT cam kit-well worth it.

Since you're already most of the way to a ZZ430, make sure you DONT use the carb they spec'd. It doesn't have a secondary metering block, but it did use a 750 Holley. I know someone who overlooked that little detail. http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/4.gif

I built a motor for my Camaro a few years back using a ZZ short block assembly, the complete GM Hot Cam kit, and a set of prepped Vortecs. Topped it off with an Edelbrock Victor intake and a Demon 650 DP.
IIRC, ran a best of 11.65 @118 mph and had great street manners...TH350, 3500 stall and 4.10 gears.

I guess I have my engine options all set.. ZZ430 here I come.

I only question that remains is the tranny. One post mentioned to use my TH 350 which is fine but I kinda like the idea of the overdrive. The car will see more street than strip so any recommendations.??;)

when did you build that combo?
i'm trying to figure out if i'm the first person to match Vortec heads with the HOT cam kit. it was a match made in heaven..
i built mine in the spring of 2000.
i'm sure i couldn't have been the first to do it, but hey, never know, right?

Derrick, You were probably one of the earliest, but we built one in 1998 with a set of factory heads off a core engine right when those cam kits came out. Was probably August or so, about 2 months after Back to the '50s. We got the idea working and staring at our display ZZ430 engine and tipping a few back after hours. Even got a pair of blank aluminum covers, then had them machined with different logo. It wasn't done through our shop, just something a few guys and someone needing an engine came up with. I followed up with mine later in about 2001, but it's nothing real special, just a working bunch of parts.

No big deal...I know a couple guys that have done the same combo.
I guess mine was built the spring of '02.
Here's a pic of the car...

Motor ran so good I sold it that late summer and built an AFR headed 383 with a solid flat cam. Actually didn't pick it up much...

Since this is mostly for the street, I'd go with a prepped 200R4 over the TH350. Sure is nice having OD on the freeway with 3:73 gears.

Hey Bill.

I like to hear your comparsion of those two motors. What did you have in the combos. How much compression did each have?

Interesting that you did not pickup much between a 350 and 383.

How does the GM "Hot Cam" compare to this cam? Is the "Hot Cam" around 270 duration and 218/228 for .525 lift on a 112

280/288 and 226/234 for .530 lift on a 108 LSA.

Think this cam will be right about the same for 430 horse and 430 torque?
