: 2004R Question
mad70ss Jan 16th, 07, 12:31 PM Need some help here.
Over the weekend I installed a 2004R into my 70 Velle. Everything is working fine, though on 4th gear, my engine boggs. Dont know why. would it be my rear gears??
I am running a mildly built 350, and my rear tires are 275/40/18. My rear gears are coded as a 2.56. Is my gear ratio to high?? need some advice.
thanks
Andy69 Jan 16th, 07, 12:43 PM My rear gears are coded as a 2.56.
Mine is a 2.73, and with lockup engaged at 70 mph, I'm turning about 1400 RPM, so, yeah, the gears are too tall.
The nice thing about the overdrive transmissions is you can swap the rear gears to something fun (like a 3.73) and still get decent gas mileage.
mad70ss Jan 16th, 07, 1:23 PM also, i noticed that my gas pedal is to short or something, cause i dont have that enough room to really punch it. cause i remember on my th350, if i was going about 40mph on 3rd gear, i would punch it and it will go to second gear. this 2004r doesnt do that, do i need to change the pedal??

Make sure your TV cable is adjusted properly - BEFORE YOU DRIVE IT ANY FURTHER. If it's off, you WILL destroy the transmission, sooner rather than later.
If you haven't already, it's best to understand the TV system completely. The geometry between the TV cable and the throttle must be correct before it can be adjuster properly.

It should be noted that your throttle must go to WOT with the gas pedal at the floor. If it doesn't, this must be corrected before adjusting the TV.
I bought the TV MAde EZ kit and the convertor lockup kit from them for my 69. Money well spent.
mad70ss Jan 16th, 07, 1:50 PM actually i took it in to Art Carr to get it adjusted. i just couldnt figure out how to adjust it properly, so i took it to the 2004r man, he adjusted the TV cable for me using his bracket. everything works fine, just that i dont have much slack on the throttle. it feels to short or something. his mechanic told me to get an aftermarket throttle cable and pedal, so i can get more throttle, is this correct??

Possibly. Check to make sure you have WOT at the carb with the pedal to the floor. Have a buddy hold the pedal to the floor, then you pull back on the throttle at the carb to see if it will open any further. If it does that means your TV cable is out of adjustment, since the throttle needs to have complete travel before you can properly adjust the TV cable. This condition needs to be fixed before you can address any TV cable problems. It might be the cable, but it could be somehting else. I'm not sure, mine fit perfectly.

No, that doesn't sound right. I used a 200-4R for several years in my 69, and the stock throttle cable and pedal worked just fine. I'm guessing you still have a TV cable problem, or else your throttle cable is connected to your carb incorrectly.
mad70ss Jan 16th, 07, 4:35 PM well accoring to Art Carr, he set it up right, so maybe i dont feel the pull since i only have 2.56 in my 10 bolt. so will see as soon as i drop the 12 bolt 3.55 posi gears tomorrow, i hope i could notice the difference and can really get going
christoforos kokkonis Jan 16th, 07, 9:34 PM if you cant get a 2/1 kickdown below 20 mphour in d2 there is a problem.sounds like art has employed a poor mechanic with bad communication skills.if he doesnt understand the tv system he shouldnt be working on a motor vehicle.
Jr1964 Jan 16th, 07, 9:34 PM As far as it bogging in 4th, how do you have the lock up switch set up? (toggle switch, direct to power, etc. ??)
What speed/rpm are you going when it's bogging?
I had a similar problem when I first set mine up.
I didn't want to deal with the toggle switch when I first got it running so I connected the lock up switch through the
proper brakeswitch to a terminal on the fusebox so when it got into 4th, it would lock up. Problem was I could be in 4th
at say 45-50mph, and with the converter locked up the rpm at that speed is too low for the engine to overcome the load, thus it boggs
or struggles to go. With 2.56 gears your rpms are too low to use/overcome the lockup below 60mph.
I got the toggle hooked up to control the lock up, usually lock it above 2200rpm and it works fine. If I need to accelerate I can turn
the switch off, or if I put my foot in it, the trans will usually unlock on its own till I back off the throttle.
As far as TV cable, TVmadeEZ worth the money IMO!!!
mad70ss Jan 18th, 07, 4:24 PM Ok UPDATE!
I did my rearend yesterday, went with a 12 Bolt, Eaton Posi and 3.55 gears. I fixed the problem with my throttle cable, i just added a little spacer to get more throttle. Fixed my speedo problem with the tranny. Changed the teeth on the governor and speedo.
Now, I also added a Vaccum switch on the 2004R to work with the brake switch, it helped, but still bogs down. the only time i get the bog down, is when i am driving and it hits 4th gear and locks up, then i slow down and try to get going again, it will not switch out of lock up. I love the lock up when i am in the freeway, but streets, i dont seem to like it much. i might take the lock up converter out and switch it to a non-hadraulic one. what do you guys think??

Keep the lockup TC. WEll, I would anyway. Too much of a PITA to swap converters. I had mine set up originally with just the brake light switch, and it would stay locked up until I hit the brake, much like disengaging the cruise control. I didn't like that, so I added a toggle switch. Basically what I do it switch it on on the highway. I plan to add a vaccuum modulator when I get the car back on the road so I don't have to constantly switch. But I think the lockup added 2 mpg to my setup, which was greatly appreciated :)

BTW how do you like the rear gears? When I redo my frame later this year I'm going to swap out the 2.73 for a 3.73
mad70ss Jan 18th, 07, 4:34 PM how did you add the toggle switch?? cause i think i might do that instead. cause you are right, mine is lock up until i hit the brake pedal. which that is the part i dont like. what do i have to do to do this toggle switch??
mad70ss Jan 18th, 07, 4:36 PM oh i love the 3.55, i havent punched it yet, waiting to break it in, hopefully by this weekend i have driving it enough (recommended 200 miles) then i could punch it!
i was thinking of going 3.73's, but i do alot of highway driving, so 3.55 are just perfect  i went from 2.56 to 3.55, nice set up.
charbilly2001 Jan 18th, 07, 5:38 PM Given that a 2004R 4th gear is 0.67 overdrive your actual final drive ratio is 1.72 with your 2.56 differential. Third gear is 1:1 so you might want to use that for better throttle response.
I have the 2004R in front of a 3.73 differential and obviously mine is a bit more peppy.
With respect to Art Carr I had some adjustment issues with my TV cable and found him to be a very patient guy. He had to hand make a linkage piece for my throttle bellcrank. It took a few tries to get it right so that the TV cable got operated correctly. Once that was ironed out the transmission was all I had expected it to be and well worth the money.
I don't have a lockup converter. Art Carr's 2004R transmissions are modified to shift into 4th gear at WOT so to me a lockup converter was unecessary .
mad70ss Jan 19th, 07, 10:53 AM The tranny is working perfect, everything is good, all it is now it the lock-up, when it goes into 4th, it locks up. So i ordered the manual switch from BTO. I am going to try that, I dont mind just switching it off in the streets and when i jump on the highway, i will switch it on. Seems like this will work for me. I will keep you guys updated on how this goes.
