Dad and I have the 53 Chevy truck cab media blasted and are welding in new patch pannels. I need to do the passenger outer cowl as the luevers for the heater fresh air are bent. What is the easiest way to remove the lead where the factory seamed it?

My buddy says to use a oxy torch and a wire brush the refill it with metal to metal filler, but I am nervous about applying all that heat and worping it.

When I removed the lead joint on a 74 Nova I used a self igniting handled propane torch to melt it out. I did not concentrate a lot of heat on the panel to warp anything and after the solder ran out of the joint I took a wire wheel and a 36 grit 3" disc to removed the remnants. After I got it out I let the joint cool normally and didn't force it by putting on a wet rag.
Removing it is a lot easier than putting it back on.
When I had first tried to remove the lead from the joint the factory paint was still on top of it and it seemed to take longer to get it out. I think the paint acted as a heat barrier but once the paint was off it was real easy.
Just be careful of the fumes and any hot lead that may splash.

Thanks Jim that was a snap. I used a regular plumbers propane sodering torch. Once most of it dripped out then I hit it with a wire brush and the rest came right out. I used regular propane I had MAPP gas in reserve but didn't need it. Glad I had the P-100 respirator on and had the shop open I took the mask off 20 min. later and could still smell the remnants.

Everglass, Duraglass, and Marglass are much better options IMO. I've seen the silver fillers fail when the glass reinforced didn't. The environment in my area puts body repair products to the test, this is the road salt capital of the world. Nobody uses the silver fillers in this area anymore, most of the stores quit stocking allmetal and metal2metal years ago.
