Sometimes the wheel on our '67 will rattle. It seems to come from inside the column sleeve up near the top. Once or twice it also made a graoning noise as I turned it. Anybody got an idea on what I can do about this?

How close does your header tube come to your steering shaft? On my El Camino, I had to dimple the tube right where it met the shaft and occasionally the torque or the flex in the shaft when I turned would cause it to rub and transfer engine vibration up the shaft. Just an idea.

The rattling is a loose, clanky type of rattle. I can't feel it in the wheel itself. The groaning was accompanied by a little shake in the wheel. I'll have to check the header tube.

Tom, the rattling is likley the steering shaft bearings. The shaft inside the collumn is rattling around some. There have been other posts about this previously but the bearings may be hard to find or the shaft may be worn quite a bit by now. Ididt sells aftermarket tilt collumns that bolt into your 67, not super cheap but easier than rebuilding the old one. My headers arn't even close to the steering so cant comment on that

There's a place in Southern California called "Steering Column Pro's". They sell rebuilt units fairly inexpensively. Their old number is 626-919-8068 and I think if you dial it will still give the new number.
