I have recently replaced my front and rear floor pans for my 68 elcamino. It looks like it has been patched together. Is there any kind of undercoating I could use to hide the seems of the new patches. Before anyone goes to thinking IM going to try and rip somebody off by hiding the patch work, IM not. I plan on keeping this car for a very long time. I have had it for 14 years already. In its current state she is going through a complete frame off rejuvenation. She will see a mix of old and new technology. The frame is painted flat black. I would like a little contrast to set off the detailig under the vehicle. Does anyone have ideas. Thanks smile.gif

Picture would be a great help. like to sand down the weld seams when I install a floor pan so that it all blends together and looks like one piece. You have to be careful when grinding on body sheetmetal though, because you can grind a hole through it real quick. I suppose you could use body filler. Por 15 makes a two part putty filler that could be used for this purpose also.

Dont have a digital camera so I cant do a picture. IM a little skiddish on grinding down the weld seems. IM using 3m sealant on top of the weld seems. Is there a paint or lining possibly brush on that will help. Maybe even something that can be sprayed. Thanks

Spray on bed liner works well. Most can be painted over.

You can do all the seams with the brush on seam sealer. Eastwood sells a nice product. I have used a 1" wide brush that I had cut down in length to stiffen it up. Do all the seams top and bottum, then paint and apply undercoat. It goes on pretty nice and will hide quite a bit. Of course the level of finish is going to be strictly related to how nice of a job you did with the sheetmetal in the first place.

Bed liner sounds good. I have heard when applying it to the bottom of a car there can be problems with adhesion. Undercoating would work but I dont want a mess of tar on everything. What do you all think. smile.gif

Did you butt weld the pans or is it a lap joint? If a butt weld was done grind your welds down and completely clean the bare metal so all corrosion etc. is removed then apply two good coats of epoxy primer followed by filler on the seams and sand smooth, primer surfacer then can be applied and sanded followed by a good quality urethane singlestage paint the color and gloss of your choice.
If the pans were installed with a lap joint do not use any filler on these seems unless they have been welded completely closed. If seam sealer is used anywhere be sure to apply a good bare metal primer (self etch or epoxy) prior to applying the seamsealer. Regular Body Schutz can cover many eyesores and was used at the factory on these cars in numerous places including wheelhouses- you may want to consider this product if finishing the welded areas for paint is not something you want to do. go to an auto paint store, get a couple cans of 3m rubberized undercoating(i dont have the part # w/me) it dries to the tiuch, looks pretty good, and is not messy-put some newspaper on the floor to catch some overspray-if you want, i will get the right part # for you

I used the Truck Bed Spray on liner for a temporary fix (after my floor padding was ruined from heater core leak). I liked the look so much that it is one of my options for doing the entire floor pan when I start the body work

the 3m # is 08883-shake it up real good, make the first quick spray on a piece of scrap paper(because it runs) then your ready(i dont use the plastic tube with it)
