I was looking around on the net and noticed that I can get some glass front fenders for 150$ or so. I was wondering what hidden costs there are and how hard they are to work with. They say they bold right up to exist mounts. The wieght savings wouldnt bother me and if the price was close I'd probably go glass for that reason(yes I know it wont save that much and my car isnt fast enough to worry about a couple pounds but it cant hurt and cutting wiehgt is free power) I'm not going to run in the winter but I do know of glasses wonderfull properties when cold. Anything else I should keep in mind? Are the glass fenders strong enough to support the stff that gets bolted to it with out other supports, I assume its a pain to attach the trim? Havent decided about inner fenders yet(glass ones are 60$) Any one know of a good source to get a rad support for a 69 BB velle? I'm just conserned with fit/quaility and cost, after market nos repo used, what ever just cheap and well built(havent really scrounged the junkyards yet) thanks for the help and sorry about the lenght and thanks as always

Hey philip, I posted a while back about glass fenders because I was concerned about using hood hinges. From what I gathered, it isn't worth doing because of strength issues. I didn't like the idea of a lift off hood either. I got my radiator support from Ausleys and it fit well with no problems. It's the BB type (4 hole retainer with large opening). I think it was $125. I looked at swap meets and junk yards, but the ones I found were worse than mine. They all seem to rot out around the frame mount brackets. Hope this helps.

Steve, You know I just took the front end apart and I kinda forgot the hinges bolt to the fenders http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif(thus didnt think of lift off hood) Could you be more specific about the strenght issue.
I have to get a hood too so I might contemplate a tilt front end but remember looking into one for my 62 chevy PU, dont amagine they are any esier on a velle?

If you search this topic you'll see some of the issues faced with glass fenders. I've seen complaints about fit as well as strength. My concern was the ability to use a bolt on hood and I don't think the glass fenders have the structural support to hold one. Another issue is the amount of bodywork needed to make the pieces look half way decent. Maybe someone else here can shed some more light on this. I just figured they weren't worth the effort for a street car, but that's me. Of course, someone might say the same about the 1/2" fuel line on my car http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I searched and most of the complaints seemed to be fit type problems. I would associate that to manufacturing process not a characteristic of glass. I didnt think about a liftoff hood problem till you mentioned hing mounts. I still havent decided if I can deal with that hassle. Its not a daily driver but it will become a PIA every time I want to run my lash and such but it is much esier to work without a hood in the way. choices choices http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif

U.S. Body Source has a great selection of 'glass parts they come in light duty and heavy duty just tell them that you will use them on a street car not drag racing and they will add the support you need.
