: 700 r4 help needed.
Brotherjoe Jan 11th, 07, 10:41 PM I just finished my first tranny rebuild a 700 r4 for my 71 Chevelle. Figures I pick a hard one to start with.
I need to set up the "lock up" but I dont know what kit to order.
I DO NOT want to have to turn a switch on and off. I would like it to operrate off of 4th gear fluid pressure. Can I set it up to come on a say in 4th gear at 60mph? What would I need to order? I hope someone can help me.
chevguy65 Jan 11th, 07, 10:43 PM Mine is set up to lock up in 4th only.
I would have to ask my builder what to do, but I would be happy to call him if you would like.

cachevelle66 Jan 12th, 07, 12:02 AM Check with Bow Tie Overdrive in CA. They make several different kit for lock-up.
Bowtie-72 Jan 12th, 07, 9:31 AM I used a lockup kit from bowtie- Overdrives for my 4th lockup. I also think B&M has a speed-oriented lockup so you can control it based on vehicle speed.
Sid Coleman Jan 12th, 07, 9:44 AM Here's the Bow tie site-lots of good info here! http://700r4.com/faq/faq.shtml
02cummins Jan 12th, 07, 10:46 AM I use bowtie overdrive I have nothing but great service from them, they stand behind what they build. and it is a great tranny.
mrsuds Jan 12th, 07, 1:21 PM Definitely speak to Chris at ckperformance.com. He is located in Long Island City.
novaderrik Jan 12th, 07, 2:13 PM i used the GMPP kit that uses a pressure switch on the valve body that sees pressure in 4th gear, and locks up the tc. i also ran the wiring thru a brake pedal switch out of a later Gm car (mid 80's or so, don't know what. it was in my junk drawer) so the tc is unlocked if i hit the brakes.
it works pretty good, but i need deeper gears and more torque to make it worthwhile to put it in od under about 45mph.
1939tudor Jan 12th, 07, 2:57 PM I have just completed putting a 700R4 in my 70 Malibu. I changed the fourth gear pressure switch but my tranny has another pressure switch in the valve body and I do not know what to do with this switch. Any ideas?

I used a swtch from a early '90s Camaro. I believe it was the brake/cruise switch.
Robinls5 Jan 12th, 07, 10:07 PM What I used for loc-up. Chuck Hanson told me about a kit cost 95.00 del. to your house. Locs up in 4th only like factory. I did not want toggle switch and a bunch of trash. My wife drives mine a lot. Stick it in od and go. The kit is a pressure switch and a 12 volt wire. Mine has been in my 70 RED 454 wagon for five going on 6 years NO problem. I LOVE it. Let me know if you need more info. Bob ACES--AACA
zeke67 Jan 13th, 07, 8:53 AM I did the same thing as Novaderrick. I've got a 4th gear pressure switch wired through a cruise/brake switch from a mid 80's Camaro. The brake light terminals and are identical so no hacking of your factory brake wires. It works like this, if the trans is in 4th and you are not on the brakes, then the converter solenoid is engaged.\
Total cost = $0. The solenoid was already in the tranny, the switch was from a junk donor car and the wire and terminals I had laying around.
BTW, there are both 1 terminal and 2 terminal solenoids and 1 terminal and 2 terminal lock up solenoids. The one terminal types are self grounding so you cannot use a one terminal switch and solenoid together.

OK, I have a ONE terminal switch and a TWO terminal soleniod.
Do I run 12v power to the RED wire on the soleniod then run the BLACK soleniod wire to the 4th gear pressure switch?
Does the SINGLE terminal 4th gear pressure switch create the GROUND when pressure is applied?
77 cruiser Jan 13th, 07, 4:42 PM Might want the put in a vac. switch so the conv. unlocks when you get into the gas hard or off the gas. Hooked to ported vac.
zeke67 Jan 14th, 07, 10:55 AM Yes, 12V to solenoid, solenoid to pressure switch, and pressure switch completes the ground.
I would check the pressure switch for continuity between the terminal and the body to be sure. It should be open with no pressure, so assume it will close with pressure applied. If it's the other way around, then use a relay in the circuit.

I am gonna give it a try.
Anyone know if I can check the pressure switch with AIR pressure from my compressor? Or will it need to be applied hydrolic pressure?

don't suppose you know where to get one of these switches? my Monte could use it. what years/makes/models of cars to look at in the junkyard or ask for at NAPA?
77 cruiser Jan 15th, 07, 7:47 AM I got one at the boneyard from a early to mid 80's truck but any carbed vehicle with a lockup conv. would work. On the trucks they are mounted in the master cly. area. If you find one get the delay valve that's on the vac. line to, it just delays the signal for a couple of seconds.
novaderrik Jan 15th, 07, 7:26 PM got a pic of the valve?
or what is the "official" name for it?
torque converter vacuum switch?
77 cruiser Jan 18th, 07, 6:36 PM Got a pic for ya. In fact 2 of them.
