: 70 front wheel question
MEICH Jan 11th, 07, 2:37 PM Any ideas, I am going to run a wheel vintques 15x8 rear ss wheel with a 275/60/15 tire on the rear with 4.5 of back spacing. My question is what rim size and tire size combo for the front. Also, what backspacing will look the best. thanks Meich
Slick71ss Jan 11th, 07, 4:03 PM All depends on what look you're going for. I would put 15x7 up front. They come in 4 3/8 backspace which will work fine. Front tires depends on how tall or wide you want them. I got 225/70/15 on the front of mine, but they are just a tad shorter than the 275/60's out back. 235/70/15 would be about the same height.
Here's some pics of my car which has 15x10 with 275/60 on the back and 15x7 with 225/70 on the front....

The first pic showing my old wheels has 235/70's up front.
Where about in Ohio are you? I'm in Lorain, about 30min west of Cleveland.
RATtyCamino Jan 11th, 07, 4:05 PM I've got 15X8's on the front with 4.5 inch back spacing. 245/60/15.
MEICH Jan 11th, 07, 6:19 PM Thanks for the pics. Great looking car also! Helps out greatly when I can see what they look like. Maybe is will use the 15x10 in the rears instead. Seem like alot go that route. What are your thoughts. I live in Youngstown area.
MEICH Jan 11th, 07, 6:21 PM Also, where is the best place around here to buy the wheels and tire combo.
Slick71ss Jan 11th, 07, 9:41 PM I got mine from SummitRacing. They had the best price I could find.
Wheel Vintiques 15x10 wheels only come with 5" backspacing. It works fine on my car, but I can't guarantee that they wouldn't rub on your car. I have Hotchkis components on my rear suspension along with air bags, so it's not a stock set-up. I've also heard that trim rings might not look quite right on the 10" wide rims. My wheels are the 52 series Oldsmobile style that do not need trim rings since they are chrome. I just threw on the SS center caps and they look close to the Chevy wheels, just a little more shine from the chrome.
So, it all depends on what style and look you're going for.
p.s. I bought my car from someone in Poland, which is near Youngstown.
MEICH Jan 11th, 07, 10:22 PM I thought the car looked familiar. I also live in Poland and know who you bought the car from. Traci was his name. The runs very well from what I remember. I also like the orange camaro. I have Cortez silver 69
z/28 too. I would like to find a second generation one but most I have seen are pretty rough. I looked on Sumitts site and cant find the fronts. I would appreciate if you could tell me the part numbers for the back and front rims if possible. I like the chrome olds style better than the painted ones. I think I will just go with your same combo. I like the look. My 70 Chevelle is also Black. Suspension is stock rearend is a 12 bolt. Thanks again.
Slick71ss Jan 11th, 07, 10:58 PM Here's the part numbers for Summit....
front 15x7.... WVI-52-5734438
Rear 15x10.... WVI-52-503405 (these will be drop shipped from manufacturer, took less than 2 weeks to get mine)
center caps.... WVI-1024-1
I bought my tires through them too, but did a price match because at the time Jegs had them listed for cheaper.
Yep, I bought the car from Traci a year ago. Small world! I've been meaning to email him to show all the changes I've made so far. He seemed like a nice guy, but then again, he was trying to sell me a car at the time.

There's a 70 with 15x8 in the rear and 15x7 in the front but different size tires. Something else to compare.
ss1970chev454 Jan 11th, 07, 11:14 PM Nice look 71ss.
I always like the look of a deeper wheel. That's a good combo
I like 215/65/15 on the front with a 3.5" BS. But I'm kind of partial to my car.
MEICH Jan 11th, 07, 11:48 PM I see some guys run a 15x10 with 5.5 of backspacing. What are your thoughts on that? Am I correct by saying the 5 inch backspacing gives the wheel a deeper look but pushes it closer to the quarter lip. Where as the 5.5 is not as deep of a look and gives more clearance from the outer quarter lip. I am assuming its all on the look both will work on my stock 70 12 bolt.
Thanks for the part numbers also

5.5 backspace would be the best choice. I don't think Wheel Vintiques makes the 15x10 in any other backspace besides 5. You may want to call them and see if you can special order 5.5bs.

Yes, correct.

I knew the 5" bs would work for me because that's what was on the car before. Like I said though, I have airbags and Hotchkis suspension, so it's not a stock setup. My wheels/tires might not travel up into the wheelwell as much going over bumps as a stock setup due to the airbags stiffening things up. You might experience some slight rubbing on the quarter lip, might not, I can't guarantee either way.
BillyGman Jan 12th, 07, 8:04 PM A lot of good points have been brought up here. I went with the 5.5" backspacing, and that's the absolute most that I could use on my 70. If you want to get the widest tires under there possible w/out wheel tubs, then the 5.5" is what you'll want for atleast 70-72 chevelles. I just barely fit P315/60/15 tires in the back, but I also had to roll back the fender lips all the way, and then "message" them a little bit too. Otherwise P275/60 would've likely been the biggest that I could go. For the front tires, I chose P235/70/15's which are 28" tall, however, I haven't put the front ones on the car yet.
MEICH Jan 12th, 07, 9:07 PM Thanks for all the help! I post some pics once they are installed. Thanks again
