: Body Mount Assembly HELP!
GarageTime Jan 3rd, 04, 11:20 AM Hello, I just received my body mount kit from Ground-Up...it has been so long since I took the car apart that I cannot remember how these go together... graemlins/clonk.gif
There are 4 pieces, bolt, washer, rubber bushing, and rubber bushing molded onto metal washer/spacer. What is the order that they go? My guess is that you go, from the bottom-up, bolt, washer, rubber bushing, frame, molded rubber bushing down through the frame and into first bushing - but this leaves metal to metal contact to the car body - is this right?
The car is a 65 SS.
70camino Jan 3rd, 04, 11:48 AM We did this about two weeks ago on a '70 El Camino. What you say sounds rights, except that we left out the loose washers. Our reasoning for that was that the original mount assemblies only had one washer and the new lower rubber mounts already had a washer molded to the rubber. We tried it with the extra washer, but the bolts seemed too short then.
I hope your bolts are better than the ones in the kit we bought. The original GM bolts had nice tapered self-centering ends, compared to the flat ended and hard to start replacements.
Also, does your car have some mounts that don't use bolts? The '70 has four of those.

GarageTime Jan 3rd, 04, 1:38 PM So you put the plain bushing between the frame and body and the molded bushing/washer piece under the frame with the head of the bolt seated in the formed washer. This would leave the plain washer to be on top, between the plain bushing and the body, correct?
70camino Jan 3rd, 04, 1:50 PM In this case, a picture would be worth many words.
The larger body mount piece (the one with the metal sleeve in it) goes on top between the body and the frame with the narrower rubber end facing down going through the top of the frame.
The smaller rubber piece (the one with the flat washer molded into it) goes next, fitting over the projecting lower end of the upper mount piece where it comes through the frame. That leaves the washer facing down. The bolt goes up through that, through both mount pieces into the body.
As mentioned in the last post, we left out the loose washers because the original GM set up did not use a double washer.

70camino Jan 3rd, 04, 1:57 PM Although its probably obvious, I forgot to mention that only the larger piece goes above the frame. You install the lower piece below the top frame member after lowering the body down to the frame.

GarageTime Jan 3rd, 04, 1:57 PM I agree a pic would make this way to easy...it sounds like our kits are slightly different. Here is what my kit looks like...

GarageTime Jan 3rd, 04, 1:59 PM Also, the bottom of those stepped ones is not flat, it is indented and the bolt fits perfectly up into it, so it appears that this goes up into the frame?
70camino Jan 3rd, 04, 2:01 PM You're right. The picture helps and the kits are a bit different. The pieces that go on top between the body and the frame look much the same. But your lower rubber pieces don't seem to have the washers molded to them like mine did. If they are just rubber with no washer molded in, you definitely need to use the flat washers between the bottom mount and the bolt.

70camino Jan 3rd, 04, 2:09 PM I think we still aren't understanding each other.
Whether or not the bolt head seems to fit well into the metal sleeve, that piece goes above the frame, not below it. In other words, the funnel shaped metal piece goes next to the car body and the narrower part of the rubber bushing around that metal piece fits down into the frame hole. Then drop the car body onto the frame and install the smaller rubber bushing and washer and bolt from below the frame.
