: 70isfine, questions about your quarter panel install pictures
bhawk Dec 2nd, 02, 9:52 PM from a prior post, I linked to your pictures showing how you installed an 80% quarter panel. Just a couple questions to help me in my install of the same type of panel on a 65. What kind of panel adhesive did you use to glue to outer wheelhouse to the quarter? Do you need an expensive gun to apply the adhesive? Do you apply the adhesive, then hang the panel in place, screw it down, then cut the top as shown in the pictures with your air saw? Not sure of the sequence there. Did you also spot weld the wheelhouse to the quarter as the glue was setting, or is glue alone sufficient? Looking forward to more of your pictures as you progress.
70isfine Dec 2nd, 02, 10:57 PM Bhawk, I used 3M automix Panel adhesive. The gun is about $70 and the adhesive is about $20 a tube, quite steep for the hobbyist. You might try Duramix,I think the gun is cheaper than the 3M,or maybe you could borrow one?I didn't spot weld the wheelhouse at all.The glue is flammable and the smoke is nasty and heat will destroy it so welding is not recomended or needed.I fit the panel, clamped it,then drilled the holes and ran screws in,at that point the panel can can come off. Then with it off, i ran the adhesive around the wheelhouse, set the panel in place, ran the screws in the holes and clamed the quarter to the wheelhouse. After all is set, clamped and screwed tight,I start cutting and tacking. The car is painted now and the quarter looks great.I'll post some pics as soon as the snow melts a little and i can get some decent shots. Its good to know that someone actually looks at that stuff!Good luck.

sevt_chevelle Dec 3rd, 02, 1:03 AM If i remember right I think that Fusor brand of glue comes with its own app gun built right in. That panel glue is more then suffient, seen many tests were a glued panel withstood longer then a welded panel. The great thing about it is that seals off the joint preventing rust from forming...Eric

bhawk Dec 3rd, 02, 1:05 PM I have a black coating on the replacement quarters and the wheelhouse. I presume it is EPD I think it is called. (what is epd anyway, a powder coating?) Do I need to grind that off completely before glueing? or can I just scuff sand it to make for better adhesion for the glue between the quarter and wheelhouse lip. Another question for 70is fine, how many screws do you use to hold the panel in place after glueing and before cutting the top line, 2 or 3 or more?
70isfine Dec 3rd, 02, 5:11 PM The 3M stuff that i used says that it has to be applied to bare metal.I dont like the idea of bare metal in the wheel opening to wheelhouse seam so i usually apply a little adhesive and spread it thinnly with my finger over all the exposed metal, then run a fat bead all the way around, assemble it and then when its clamped tight it will ooze out around the edge,so you know its sealed. As for the screws it depends, how many ever it takes to hold the panel tight.I think on that one,i had one in each corner and a few across the top.EDP is electic deposit plating.
sevt_chevelle Dec 3rd, 02, 7:25 PM Bhwak if you do go the 3M route make sure you get the structual glue not the door skin glue. The glue we use is under the part number 8115. All of the shops in my area all use 3M, so I think so should be able to rent or borrow the app gun from a local bodyshop.
GVMLS6 Dec 4th, 02, 11:10 PM Most "glue" manufacturers recommend not only removing the black epoxy coating, but also recommend removing the galvanizing if it has it. I have seen bonds fail when the galvanized coating came loose from the bare steel
