I have an all original #'s match 69 Malibu Convertible #52 Garnet Red....it needs to be repainted. Any thoughts on how I get someone to match the color as close as possible? Can any paint shop match a 69 garnet red color? What steps do I need to take. Thanks for your help. Jim #735

Here's what I did for my Camaro - inside the door, underneath the vinyl door panel, there usually is some pretty good, original paint. I buffed it out to ensure it really shined.

I removed the door and brought the entire door to the paint supply shop. They were able to optically scan the top of the inside door section to get a good read on the paint color. With that, they were able to exactly match the color, as sprayed at the Van Nuys plant the second week of April, 1969!

For what it's worth this color was actually off (more correct though), from the current paint chips/codes prescribed for my Cortez silver car, per the paint suppliers std mixes. The current mixes were apparently missing some tint.

This came to particular light when I first sprayed part of the car, and noticed it did not match the side cowl color. That's when I stopped and used the above process to get an exact match.

That's what I'd recommend too since there are so many variations of Garnet Red and many generic "Garnet Reds". Since it's not a metallic color I'd get a single stge urethane instead of base coat/clear coat. Easier to color sand, buff, touch up, and repair.
