: Chevelle on a C5 chassis? Can it be done?

Just looking through my options and I saw a full C5 rolling chassis. Just wondering if anybody had ever heard of screwing a 68-72 Chevelle onto a Vette chasis?

You bet, but it would require extensive fab work. Wheelbase would need to be altered which would require torque tube & shift linkage lengthening, track width could probably be made to work, etc. The torque tube is the tricky part as it is one big piece of aluminum. If you search for Jay Leno's C5-chassis Toronado you can find some build details and how they tackled the job, but he has a garage full of excellent fabricators and friends at GMPP willing to lend factory backing and knowhow!

A couple guys have tackled the job involving 1st gen Camaros and it is not a trivial task by any means. A local friend had Wayne Due do the job to his 68 Camaro (complete frame/cage using C5 suspension including the transaxle) and I think the bill was well over the 20K mark and almost to 30K.

Here's pics of another Wayne Due project, full C5 & transaxle in another 1st gen Camaro.

Exactly what I would have recommended.

There are workarounds now for the torque tube, you can run the C5 rear suspension cradle & diff and put an adapter on the diff and use a standard driveshaft and engine mounted tranny to eliminate the torque tube... however you lose the weight distribution benefits of the torque tube & transaxle which is a huge appeal to using the complete C5 setup in the first place!

You could also probably keep the stock torque tube and just do a massive engine setback (which would be good for weight distribution) but then you have to deal with seating position and footwell issues. You'd probably end up with your front seats about 8-10" further back from the stock position and the engine would be well hidden under the cowling & windshield base.

Still, given the rather substantial change in wheelbase needed to make it work on an A-body you would be better off fabbing new chassis rails including front and rear cradles and just bolting the C5 suspension bits onto that.

Which brings us to another option... Have Art Morrision build you one of their Max-G chassis that is setup to accomodate C5 Vette up front, and then out back either have them set it up to use the C5 IRS setup, or their C4L or 3-link stick axle setup. However the Morrison frame runs just over 5 figures bare and goes up from there and will require you to completely remove your floorpan and mount the body and do all new custom floor sheetmetal work. It's a hell of a nice frame but is a rather involved install and not cheap.

Those are all issues that I was looking at. The sad thing is that the wheelbase of the Chevelle is only 8.5 inches longer and side to side is close enough to be negligable. Oh well, can't help but dream big.

All it takes is lots of $$$$$
