: 67 Chevelle front springs.
edward67 Jan 5th, 07, 9:58 PM Need help
I installed a new set of B.B coil springs in the front of my 67 B.B car and found the front end to be very stiff and it also seems to be much higher than stock. I had to install a new set of coil springs in the rear with an additional 2" lift to get the car level, but now the car is overall to high. I hate to get into changing in and out front coil springs to get the ride hieght correct. I don't know if I should buy a new set of B.B spings from a different company, install small block springs or install a set of QA1 coil over converisons. Does any one have any recomendations or have used the coil over conversion.

ss1970chev454 Jan 5th, 07, 11:14 PM I know you say you don't want to change springs in and out, but that's going to be your best bet with what you have. This way you don't have to buy anything else.
QA1 are not cheap
I would cut them down until you get it where you want. That's what I had to do, and they were lowing springs to boot. Took 3 times. It got to be I could change both front coils in about 30 min.
grovey Jan 6th, 07, 3:08 PM the springs will settle atleast a inch with use. i wanted the look that you have by the sounds of it. i ordered 4 new springs from a " custom " spring company. i asked that my car set a inch and a half higher than stock. it was almost as high as i wanted when they were installed, but has settled aprox 2 inches since then. really ticks me off ! i even asked for a stiffer spring than stock. does your car have a bbc in it ? maybe we could swap pics of our cars ( mines a 66ss ) if you like the stance of mine ,and vice versa we could swap front springs ? the rears will not swap out though , mine are different at the top. just a thought. tim
Something that you might try that was recommended by a friend to me was to put your car on a trailer or other rack where you can use a come-along to pull down on the car's suspension from below (i.e. hooked to the cross member). If you leave the car in that compressed state for a period of time (if you can afford to let it sit in that state for a day or two), they say it will speed up the "settling" of the springs.
Like others have said, if you cut before they're settled, it'll probably settle more from there & be too much.
gehant2006 Jan 6th, 07, 4:09 PM wondering if anyone has heard of someone cutting their springs to get a desired height and what kind of luck they had with it ? thank you Mike

yes...me.
installed hotckis lowering springs front and rear. front sat higher than back by 1/2". I let settle for about a month with no change. at that point i cut the front coils 1/4 coil at a time before i got the correct rake. took 3 times and about 3/4's of the coil. that was 5 years ago. the car settled maybe another 1/2" and I am happy with the stance
swcash Jan 7th, 07, 2:20 AM Edward, just out of curiousity, is your bb stock or do you have a lot of lightweight aluminum parts. Also, is it auto or manual trans w or w/o air cond? Do they account for these items when you order the springs? I have a small block 68 that is going bb and I will be changing my springs soon.

My car is a 67 B.B with a four speed w/o air and no aluminum except for the intake. I got the front springs at Advanced auto and I think they are TRW. I got the springs about a year ago and if I recall they only offered one spring for a 67 S.S. I had to ordered a set of 2" taller springs for the rear to get the car to set level. If I was doing it over again I would install the engine, put the size tire I was going to run on the car and then get my ride height were I wanted then pull everything back apart for paint.

edward67 Jan 8th, 07, 4:35 AM Hey Tim
I have a B.B in my car and installed the springs about a year ago but I only have had the engine in for about 6 months. We can exchange pictures but I don't think you would like the springs that I have because they are very stiff and the front end is so high I think its going to effect the handling of the car.

DaleM Jan 8th, 07, 10:21 AM Chevrolet lists 5 sets of springs for the SS396 in 67. The hardtop had
* Base production regardless of transmission
** with RPO C60 (A/C)
*** with RPO F40
**** with RPO F40 and C60
and with the exception of the base production spring, the convertible used the same as the hardtop w/C60 and/or F40
Many aftermarket suppliers like Moog, TRW, etc. used to list springs as standard, heavy duty, station wagon, etc. Chevrolet lists 25 different front springs for 1967 depending on series (13x), model (17/67/80/etc) and options.
grovey Jan 8th, 07, 6:03 PM hey ed, your probably right. it's getting cold here, and i don't have anywhere to let my car set while waiting on a set of springs. if ya sell i may be interested in your fronts. i would still like to see how yours sets though. tim
cardude905 Jan 8th, 07, 6:41 PM hello, just a thought, if you are going to cut them do it in small intervals! you only cut a half coil at a time, otherwise before you know it ,it will bw to low. i, know it is a pain in the butt cutting and putting back in but, trust me, i, know , i, cut too much off once and had to throw the springs in the trash! good luck!
