So I got the 1/4 test fitted, looks great around the door area, sail panel. Installing a new deck filler, that seems to be going well. Am having a problem with the new tail panel though, seems that it's going to need some persuasion right under the area where the 1/4/trunk lid seam is. I think that the severe "inside bend" that they have to stamp in would cause this problem. Anybody dealt with this before? Still got to install the bumper to check that out, but the new 1/4 seems to line up where I removed the old one. My other ? is do you seal all of the joints after the welding, I would think so as you can't weld through seam sealer to well. What's the reccomended sealer for this area? Makes me nervous, as I've got alot of cash invested in all of these panels, moving slowly so as to not screw it up. Read the "basics of basics" that helped quite a bit. Looking for some specific info on what happened with your chevelle job. Anybody else who has done this please chime in and tell me what helped you "git er done" Thanks, Dave.

usually that area will need a little effort to get aligned and clamped, post some pics if you can of this area. The seam sealer is applied after installation and bodywork completed and over your primer. Bob

So I went out this morning and worked with it some more, I'm starting to feel pretty good about how it's fitting. Still have some issues right behind the tire, will post some more pic's in a moment. Got to figure a little better lighting. See if these help, or I'll post some more after the photographer get's home from work. My wife know's alot more about this freakin' camera then I do. Thank's for the help. Let me know what you think, Dave. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/71metbu/trunklidfit.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/71metbu/trunkgap.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/71metbu/tailpanelfit.jpg

Make sure you try the rear valence on before you weld it up. I see a lot of 70-72s that have the 1/4 out to far at the bottom and the valence doesnt fit right. I had to pull mine in with a come along after it was painted, luckily I didnt hurt anything.

Maybe am not understanding the question but I dont see any thing out of place. The only thing I see is in the first pic of your second post, the filler panel and edge or 1/4 has a slight funny edge.
I had this problem with BOTH nos and goodmark panels. What I did was use a hammer and dolly and slighty work that filler panel edge in so I could get a tighter fit.
Also I see the top edge of 1/4 is not perfectly straight, I would also rework that area. Some a pointed hammer but with a DULL edge and littly tap that corner out, or even a wood dowel might do the trick.

As Toocool metioned, check the valance fit as well. The BEST way to spot a 1/4 replacement is because either the bumper or valance DONT fit right. I truely believe no one takes the time to test fit them first graemlins/clonk.gif

But really I dont see anything wrong but am also looking at pics off my computer.
I sure would be interested to see how that tailpiece works out Ive got a 70 that needs JUST that piece for some reason.

Something else to note, install the rubber bumpers on the decklid and weather strip around the trunk. You might find that you need to lower the 1/4. Which can be done by bring that tailpanel's BOTTOM FLANGE outward. keep everything in the same place just bring that flange outward. Also clamp that piece down you will be amazed how much movement it has especially around the corners

Since I first posted, I got the tail panel to settle into place. It looks much better, then before. Just ordered a new valance panel, got mine out of storage and deciced it just wasn't worth it, for $60.00 I got a new one. Just mounted the rear bumper, looks pretty good. Will post some more pics soon. Thank you for all the help, Dave
