: Rusty frame on a '70 Chevelle

I am looking at getting a 1970 bone stock Chevelle with 35,000 miles on it. It looks like they went for a Minnesota winter drive and parked it for years without cleaning the underside. It looks like barnacles on a ship. Non of that bothers me too much except the rust on the frame. I read all the posts around here on the subject but still want to ask the question.

On the drivers side ahead of the door where the frame curves in then up there is a lot of rust and a hole or two about the size of a dime, the other side is OK. It is not flexing here so it is not too bad.

So, here is the question, can this be cleaned up and reinforced a bit? Would you do it if you could get the car for $500.00? I could part it out and make a few bucks after a lot of work but I would love to have another '70 Chevelle like that first one I had back when I was 18!

Thanks for your opinions !!!

I would go for it. My chevelle has rust in the same spot with a patch welded over it and doesn't flex. I have rott in other areas though....so Im replacing my frame.

For 500 bucks you could set it on a new frame and still make out ;) It'll be some work, but well worth it. I second the go 4 it.

I found out yesterday I get the car if I want it!!! It is my neighbors dad's car who has pasted away some time ago. Being a good neighbor I have first pickins' over the other interested parties. It pays to be a good neighbor don'tcha think?

The rear bumper has been pushed in about 2 inches dead center on it. Has anyone ever tried using a winch or come-a-long to pull this back out?

Plus ... it is a 2-door!!!

I think that the last year the rear bumpers were attached to the frame on a chevelle was 1968 and the years after were attached to the body, So if the bumper is pushed in 2 inches, then the tail panel is most likely pushed in a bit as well. I say get the car, haul ass and switch out that frame (safely) while you are at it...run new lines etc etc etc....bolt the car back together (correctly) and go to town.
